Help recyclers, drink wine

Valley Community for Recycling Solutions is hosting “Barefoot in the Snow,” a fundraiser Nov. 14 at Raven Hall on the state fairgrounds. The event is for adults from 4 to 8 p.m. to raise money to continue to provide recycling for the greater Mat-Su Borough. There will be wine tasting sponsored by Barefoot Winery and Odom Distributors. Advanced tickets are available online at www.valleyrecycling.org or at the VCRS office.  $35 per person or $60 per couple. At the door, tickets are $40 per person or $75 per couple.

At Whole Wheat Radio

There will be an on-air interview Nov. 13 with singer-songwriter Carrie Elkin from Austin, Texas. There will be coffee from 11 a.m. to noon. Be part of the live studio audience and hear Carrie perform her beautiful acoustic songs live. Free. Signed CDs will be available for sale. Concert will be from 8 to 11 p.m. $10 suggested donation, 100 percent of which goes to Carrie.

Calling artists

The Mat-Su Borough School District, working with the municipality of Anchorage, is requesting concept proposals for artwork to be commissioned for the interior of Fred and Sara Machetanz Elementary. The committee is requesting concept or thumbnail proposals from artists. The total budget for all projects is $125,000. Artists are invited to tour the school Friday. Proposals are due Nov. 30 by 4 p.m. and should include a concept proposal, resume, a CD with 10 images and an image identification sheet.

Art show opening

Primrose Retirement Community will have an opening reception for several Valley artists Nov. 14 from 1 to 3 p.m. The show  — with artists over 60 years of age — is titled “Art From The Young at Heart.” Primrose is at 889 N. Elkhorn Dr. in Wasilla. For more information, call Jessica at 315-4025.

Free concert

The Matanuska Susitna Orchestra will be performing at the First Presbyterian Church of Wasilla tonight at 7 p.m. Donations will be accepted to support the church’s Deacon’s Furniture Ministry. The Fall Classics Concert will feature pieces from Mendelssohn, Brahms, Bach, Haydn, Dvorak as well as some exciting new pieces from modern composers such as Tarrega and Safford.

Dance classes

Ballroom, swing and Latin dance classes will be held at the borough gym in Palmer. Instructor Tammie Press will teach one dance style per four-week session. The classes are for people age 14 and up. The cost is $40 per session. A minimum of 10 is required. The classes are Wednesdays from 7 to 8 p.m. They run through May. VPA production

Valley Performing Arts will stage “Spider’s Web” through Sunday. All performances begin at 8 p.m. The story line includes a murder that takes place at an inconvenient time. The mystery is solved as a “web” of lies is unraveled.
