Dozen Valley athletes qualify for state

WASILLA — A dozen Mat-Su Valley athletes have qualified for the ASAA/First National Bank State Swimming Championships, which is slated to start Friday at 1 p.m. at Bartlett High School.

Wasilla leads Valley teams with nine qualifiers. On that list are three Region III champions.

Senior Jeff Frey posted record-breaking wins en route to earning outstanding boys swimmer honors at the Region III Championships at Skyview High School last Saturday.

Frey will swim in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events at the state championships, and is part of a pair of Wasilla relay teams — the 200 medley and 200 freestyle — that qualified.

Senior Christian Long, the Region III champion in the 500 freestyle, qualified for both the 500 freestyle and 100 backstroke.

A third senior and region champion, Rachel Kennedy, will dive in the state meet.

Senior Dylan Spargo qualified in the 100 breaststroke and the two relay events. Senior Karina Barria will compete in the 50 freestyle. Brittany Shattuck (200 individual medley) and Mariah Schachle (diving) also qualified for the Warriors.

Kevin Snavley, Ben Fife, Brandon Little, Michael Foy Keith Pulver are also among the qualifiers on the Wasilla relay squads.

A trio of Colony Knights have also advanced to the state championships.

Katelyn Panye will swim in a pair of events for CHS. Payne has qualified in the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke.

Nicholas Brunger also qualified in two events. Brunger will swim in the 50 and 100 freestyle races.

Alexander Deedy earned a berth into the state championships with his second-place finish in the 1-meter dive at the Region III meet.

The preliminary round of the swimming events will begin Friday at 1 p.m. at the Bartlett Pool. The diving preliminaries are slated for 3:30 p.m.

Action on Saturday starts with the diving semifinals at 9:30 a.m. The swimming finals start at 1 p.m., with eight events packed into the first 40 minutes of the final round.

The diving finals are scheduled for 1:45 p.m. Saturday. Swimming finals will continue at 3:15 p.m.
