Rookie leads Colony to win

WASILLA — Earlier in the week, Colony freshman Luke Moma was skating on the Knights’ second line. But before the Knights stepped on to the ice to play their season-opener against the Houston Hawks, Moma was promoted to the top unit.

Turns out, that was a pretty good call by the Colony coaching staff.

Moma scored a pair of goals during his first high school game and led the Knights to a 3-1 win over the Hawks at the Curtis C. Menard II Memorial Ice Arena in Wasilla.

ROBERT DeBERRY/Frontiersman Colony sophomore Forrest Savel blocks a Houston shot as Colony blueliner Stephen Tobin moves Houston'€™s Ken Doss out of the crease Friday at the Curtis C. Menard II Memorial Ice Arena in Wasilla.

“We made some shifts on our lines and that helped us out,” Colony first-year head coach Fred McKenney said. “(Moma’s) a good little player.”

Moma scored twice in the third period and sophomore goalie Forrest Savel made 22 saves to help the Knights score the come-from-behind win over a shorthanded, but scrappy, Houston squad.

Kyle Miller also scored for the Knights.

After Miller tied the game late in the second period, Moma gave the Knights the lead with a power-play goal 21 seconds into the third. The freshman forward picked up a lose puck just beyond the center line and fired a shot from the blue line.

“They left (the puck), and I came in and tried to get it in deep,” Moma said.

Moma slapped the shot toward the goal, and the puck trickled through the grasp of Houston goalie Ben Barenburg.

Midway through the third, Moma skated through the left circle, picked up the rebound of a Trevor Nickerson shot and snuck the puck into the net to give the Knights the 3-1 lead.

“I was circling around the net and found the rebound,” Moma said.

Miller tied the score at 1-1 late in the second, when he capped an odd-man rush with a quick wrist shot. Alex Conrad led the rush, created by a Houston turnover near the blue line. Conrad was tripped up on the play, but still managed to get the puck to Miller to set up the score.

Sophomore defenseman Zach Lovelace gave the Hawks the lead earlier in the second with his first career goal. With the Hawks on the power play, Zack Weisz sent a pass from the point to Lovelace, who was in the slot. Lovelace flipped a shot on net.

Colony sophomore netminder Forrest Savel stopped 21 Houston shots, only letting the Lovelace attempt by.

“He would have had to been Jacques Plante to save that one,” McKenney said, making a reference to the National Hockey League legend who back-stopped the Montreal Canadians to six Stanley Cups. “(Forrest) did a great job. He made some key saves that kept us in the game.”

Despite being outshot in every period, Houston was able to put some solid chances on net. Forward Ken Doss used a nifty stick move at the blue line to create a quick 1-on-1 chance that Savel needed to knock away midway through the first.

Freshman Lane Styers chipped the puck up to Johan Shuey who had a solid shot on a Houston 2-on-1 later in the period.

Overall, Houston head coach Mike Styers was proud of the play of his small squad, which features only six players on the bench.

“We kind of let down in the third, but other than that I thought they played with them,” Styers said. “We’ve got some real young, inexperienced players, but they worked hard.”

Styers was particularly impressed with Barenburg, who recorded 27 saves in the loss.

“Definitely a big improvement over last year,” Styers said of Barenburg, who is beginning just his second season as a goaltender. “I thought he had a real good game.”

Wohlers recorded an unassisted tally at the 9:49 mark to give the Warriors the 2-1 lead.

But just more than a minute after Wohlers scored, Kyle Head snuck a puck past Wasilla goalie Chris Yaskus to tie the score at 2. Tayler Wells followed with another South score at the 7:52 mark.

" Dont dress weak players if they arent going to play. Then you have nothing sitting on the bench but players that can play. No more problems. Strengthen the lines you do have and let them work together. Shift what you have and dont use inadequate fillers. "

" You need to come out to few games before making comments. #9 has received only a few penalties, and this is with the refs watching his every move. #44 has more assist then goals, and every valley team has varsity players that are should be JV, low numbers. As for the loss to Bartlett, Colony out shot them 2 to 1 and out played them, just could not buy a goal, it happens. They are coming together as a team. Sit back and enjoy the season. "

" #44 is currently leading the team in assists but not goals this year... #9 is not leading the team in penalty minutes unlike last year. Although we still have a lot of work as a team I think its unfair to say that its the same team as last year. In regards to the bench, that is up to the coaches and I think we all know that no matter where you are politics will still come in to play. "

" You are sticking up for your team and that is fine. However, #9 still is out of control, #44 isnt a team player, your defense tries to skate the puck up the ice rather than pass. Thats how you lost to the worst team in the ASD. Your coach plays kids that should be on JV and no where near the varsity bench. One of which is only on the team because of Daddy!

You cant play as a team and that is where you will fail to win the simple games. Nothing changes! "

passing the puck up ice makes a TEAM

trying to dangle through everyone and get penalties doesn't

    good luck against Dimond "

    3-1 what a shame wrote on Nov 10, 2009 1:29 PM:

" You played against a team that has at best 4 players that can actually play hockey, a goalie that is in his 2nd year and you had twice as many players. Not a good score but hey, at least its a win. Play like that against Dimond and it will be double digits against you. No matter who is on the ice, you need to play hard as a team. And you still have laeftovers from last year acting like they are Gretzky. Leran to play and win as a team! "

" Yeah, Colony may have only beaten Houston 3-1 but they were missing two players from their rosters. It will be an interesting game as Colony opens up against Dimond in the first game of the Menard tournament. As for Wasilla being the "top" team in the Valley? No. Without Wohlers, the Warriors would never have a chance! Now Colony and Wasilla will hopefully face off soon and see who is the powerhouse in the Valley this year. "

Warrior Fan wrote on Nov 9, 2009 1:09 PM:

" What a great game for the Warriors. I thought you would have been blown out by South. Way to hang in there. It will be great to see you as region champions this year. Keep up the good work.

Palmer- keep on truckin! You need to enjoy this year and have fun with it. Maybe in a few years you will have a chance again. "

Peninsula fan wrote on Nov 9, 2009 8:03 AM:

" Colony better play harder than that if they want to get by better teams like Wasilla or Soldotna. They have talent but need to work together better. Wasilla played a great game and had good attitude to win. Palmer has lost alot of players but can be the spoiler for the valley easily. Any team not taking the other team seriously can lose a game. Better wake them up! "

Hockey Mom wrote on Nov 8, 2009 7:45 PM:

" That's how Houston rolls i.e. storm off ice after loss. It is a huge turnaround for the Colony team if sportsmanship is brought up as a positive comment. Have a fun season! "

Sportmanship wrote on Nov 8, 2009 3:28 PM:

" Colony had a great display of sportsmanship after their game. They went to center ice as is tradition to shake the opponents hands. The other HOST team decided to skate off the ice without shaking hands and put a sour taste in the high school game. To bad their coaches wouldn't display the attitude towards a well played game. Way to go COlony and also Wasilla for a hard played game against South High. 2 region teams of the valley "

Thanks Colony wrote on Nov 8, 2009 10:03 AM:
