Kudos for standing up for pets

I support resident Bill Zeddies’ letter to the editor urging our neighbors to stop allowing their cats and dogs to have kittens and puppies. We need to speak out more against this issue. Fix your pets.

Too many times I see people in the parking lot of our Mat-Su businesses trying to sell their kittens or puppies to make money. Spay or neuter your animals. Ten million cats and dogs are killed every year no thanks to your contribution. Our local businesses should ban people from selling on their property.

To the people who respond and give the argument they are trying to sell the animal rather than abandon it or kill it themselves — guess what, get your animal fixed in the first place. No brainer.

Here’s an idea. Get a real job, get a second or third job if you consider that your extra income.

Get a job or volunteer at the local animal shelter and then offer to help euthanize and dispose of the animals that can’t get adopted. Maybe that will change your mind.

To the buyers of those animals being sold in the parking lots — get an animal at the shelter.

Citizens, get a clue about our animal population. Be a responsible animal owner if you are going to own pets. Feel uncomfortable about this subject? Good, maybe it will change your mind and viewpoint and pathetic justification.

    " Shelter dogs/adult adoptions
For 25 years we had AKC Field Trial bred Labs, nothing else. Nothing else would give us the thrill of competiton & the ego boost of having a well bred & trained dog. Well, Things changed with 3 adopted adult dogs. Daisy, obedience training, model, and mascot (great arm candy), Molly is a master level Dockdog, Morgan won the ADN Howl-oween costume contest. No AKC papers, all winners & more fun than field trials. Adopted unpapered dogs can now compete in a variety of events and provide ample ego boosting and fun "

" Among the animal lovers we are preaching to the choir it seems. Its true that buying a pet in a parking lot encourages others to breed and sell their pets there. One problem is the local governments have no laws against it. In Wasilla selling pets is akin to a garage sale. No sales tax is collected. In 2008 "American Bull Dog" pups were sold in the Fred Meyer parking lot. 18 mos later several 18mo to 2 yr old ABD are in the shelter. Its a vicious cycle. "

" If you can't afford to spay or neuter your pet, then perhaps you shouldn't have one. Senseless breeding does nothing but overload an already too full animal shelter and causes the eventual deaths of a lot of good animals.
If you are a responsible, reputable breeder who would never sell animals in a parking lot that is a different story.
However I am ashamed to say that I did purchase my dog at Carrs. He is the greatest and I could puke when I think of who he could have ended up with! "

" We just added a new addition to the family, an approximately ten year old spayed min pin. Apparently, this poor old girl was found outside of a shopping mart in the cold. She ended up at the Shelter.

Though "Rosie" is elderly, she has been a tremendously wonderful addition to the family. Also, because she's older, we haven't had to go through potty training or the chewing stage. We get to enjoy a wonderfully behaved, extremly loving dog, and Rosie gets a loving retirement home. Adoption can be a win-win all the way around! "
