PALMER — Jamie Mayo has stepped down from his position of head coach of the Colony Knights football program, according to a press release issued by Colony High School.

Mayo’s resignation ends a 16-year stay with the program. Much of Mayo’s tenure was spent as the team’s defensive coordinator. Mayo was promoted to head coach after former Knights mentor Randy Magner retired before the 2005 season.

“I think that he has one of the best defensive minds in the state, in terms of overall defensive strategy and defensive coaching,” Colony activities director Mike Boyd said in the release. “He also spends a ton of his time working with kids. We’ll sure miss him.”

During Mayo’s second season at the helm, he led the Knights to the 2006 state championship game. Mayo also helped extended Colony’s state-best streak of 14 straight trips to the large-schools state playoffs.

“Jamie Mayo is passionately dedicated to the Colony Knights football program and his contributions to our school and athletes are truly appreciated,” Colony principal Cyd Duffin said in the release.

" Best news we have had all year. It is time to bring in the new era of football, and with the team that we will have this next year, it is time for this change. Rumor is that you want to stay and do defense, but I agree with the earlier statement from Wasilla, they want you and we are glad to see you go. Just go all the way and don't stick around to "help out."

Don't let the door hit you on the way out. "

" Rumor has it you are going to help coach the IFL predator team. Please tell me this is a bad rumor. I hate to see a great coach go down a losing trail.

tell me its not true! "

" Come to Wasilla and remake their Defense. You know they have the kids, they just need the schemes and coaching. "

    " to the editors
Just wondring if it is the Frontiersman policy to only print favorable comments??? I think everyone should be able to have their opinion heard, not just the people who are sad to see him go. My last comment was not favorable but also not beligerant or nasty, but it was not posted.
    It makes me wonder..... "

" I have nothing but good things to say about Coach Mayo and the Colony program over the years. Hopefully this was a choice that Coach Mayo thought was right for him and his family, and not something that happened due to outside influences. Best of luck in the future coach! "

" He was a great coach, both sides of the ball. We at Wasilla hated facing his offense. He knew as a defensive coach that in High school you put the ball in the best athletes hands and it creates points. This is not the NFL. Some of the Colony parents want to see a pro-set offense. That way all the kids can share touches. Well, that will be fair but you will loose a lot more games. "

" Thank you Coach Mayo for all of your hard work!
You suffered through too many "arm-chair" quarterback parents this season who thought they knew better, but many of us know you are the best! "

" Sorry to see him go, but I hope he stays with Baseball. He did a lot for my son when he played baseball for him. Now the question is who will replace him, whats Magner doing these days, just kidding of course. But I do belive it is time for a new coach, I know they have a great coach on the C team that could fit the bill or maybe they need to look outside the group for a new coach. "
