Wasilla got more than it bargained for with building purchase

Published on Thursday, November 19, 2009 9:39 PM AKST

The city of Wasilla’s announcement that it has found a new home for its aging and cramped library came as a surprise to many, including a library steering committee and Friends of the Wasilla Library.

Charged with finding a new location for the library, it seems puzzling the committee was left out of the loop of such a significant decision. City officials say there was no time to consult the committee, that the amazing deal it got for purchasing the Meta Rose Square shopping center — $1.5 million — was too good to pass up. The asking price is $500,000 less than the indoor shopping mall’s assessed value, but had to happen before the end of the year.

It seems unlikely there was absolutely no time to consult with the committee about this, a body of city and community members who have put considerable time and effort into finding a new home for the library. How much time could it have taken to make a few phone calls or send out an e-mail to the committee members calling for a special meeting?

That’s not to say the Meta Rose is a poor choice for a new library. It’s still centrally located and more than twice the size of the current library. Still, at 21,000 square feet, it’s much smaller than the 37,000 square feet the committee has determined is needed.

“It’s frustrating,” said Jeanne Troshynski, chairwoman of the steering committee and president of the Friends of the Wasilla Library. “We worked with a consultant. We’ve really tried to be diligent making sure we’ve looked at what the community needs. Now, it’s all for naught.”

We’re thrilled Wasilla city officials have put such a high priority on upgrading its public library. It’s long overdue. But we’re forced to wonder why, if the city can be so easily swayed by a “buy me now” offer, how much real research and study went into determining if the Meta Rose Square shopping center really is the best choice.

Also, by acting outside the loop of the steering committee, the city has alienated those it had asked to help. Asking community-minded residents to give their time and effort, then ignoring them is not good policy. How many will be so willing to step up to the plate again?

The city got a great deal and the Meta Rose may make a wonderful library, but the monetary savings from acting so quickly may have cost Wasilla more than it bargained for.

" This is like an action that is more predictable from our neighbor city to the north. Their recent interactions have obviously influenced our Mayor and some Council members. Foolishness does rub off. .The next plan from an unpredictable administration is currently hatching behind closed doors. Standby for change. Who needs a capital budget? "

" Excellent choice for a new library. Put up the book shelves, open the doors, and let the reading begin. Didn't have to study this too hard to come to the right choice. Starting to get a real down town. Got people now working for us that are not suffering from paralysis form analysis. "

" This is the same post "Posted" a year ago and what you can't seem to understand is that the information you used to write your papers was from a library via your computer. Did you not cite your references? Who do you think selected the material for inclusion in the reference? LIBRARIANS. SLED is the state library online with references you cannot get without a subscription that the state provides to you. The college reference internet site IS the library. And hundreds of kids, residents and visitors visit the library for the books in print. "

" The Frontiersman should put a poll on the front page and ask when was the last time you visited your local library. I guess if you have kids the programs offered there are good, story time and that stuff. But libraries are going the way of the print newspaper.
I am a few classes away from my masters with a 3.6 gpa and have yet stepped foot in a library. So I must not be lacking knowledge which is what ignorant means. Just stating a fact. "

" Really? We really need a bigger library? Who even goes to the library? I can't remember the last time I was even in one. What's in a library that isn't online now? Ole Dewey and the card catalog have been replaced by Google and IP's. What about the businesses in those store fronts? I'm sure they get a lot of foot traffic from the central location, now they will have to move and might not get the business that they used to. I think 1.5mil could be used on other things. "

Poor planning. It'll cost a bundle to transform this building into a library. "

" In the last year I have seen millions of dollars coming from the general reserve and general fund account for capitol projects including the Meta Rose Square.

The problem is not just in the purchase of these projects but in the future city budgeting for operations and maintenance. How much will it cost the city to remodel the Meta Rose square and maintain it? Also, where was the thought regarding a joint library/civic center?

Thank you Jeanne and all for your many years of support for the library. Colleen "

The Committee would probably just hem and haw and spend more $$$ for consultants and still have nothing. The consultants are just ticked because they aren't going to make more money off the city. Be grateful you have a place for the library, some cities are losing their librairies! "

Their intention is NOT to serve and provide for the citizenry but to continue their self righteous alliance with developers, contractors and in this case old guard good old boys bailing out of real estate. These EMPLOYEES have little or no personal investment within the city, one does not even own property, and yet they can illegally continue their parasitic practices for their own personal benefit while the rest of us feed and cloth them.
