TALKEETNA — The new Susitna Valley Junior and Senior High School is set to open after the winter break, Mat-Su Borough School District Superintendent George Troxel told the school board at Wednesday’s meeting.

Students in the northernmost reaches of the borough have been without a permanent school since the summer of 2007 when the old school burned down.

Since then, students have attended class in portable buildings and the borough has been negotiating with its insurance carrier while spending $27 million constructing the new building.

Borough manager John Duffy said in this month’s manager’s report that the building is 95 percent complete, artists are scheduled to install their work and firefighters are familiarizing themselves with the school’s fire systems.
