Speak up for parental rights

Published on Saturday, November 21, 2009 9:19 PM AKST

Dear editor:

Just recently there was a letter to the editor from the Alaska Family Council regarding the 09PIMA bill. Thirty-four states have parental notification rights for an abortion procedure for minor women.

The majority of Americans support this law regardless of their positions on abortion, according to the Harte-Hanks survey.

Supporting choice in abortion does not remove parental responsibility for the health and care of minor-aged women. It is reasonable to get parents involved, especially if there is abuse in the family.

A minor-aged woman does not have to go back into the same abusive secretive situation. The bill allows for safeguards for the minor child and their rights as individuals. It seems like this only makes sense, and yet Alaskan parents have no voice legally to be notified of an abortion procedure of their minor child as the law stands now.

Please sign the petition to give Alaskans the right to vote on this bill before Dec. 1. More than 32,000 signatures are needed to put this bill on the ballot. Alaskans can go to Alaskansforparentalrights.org for information.

" Another opinion by someone that thinks that world is all black and white. The purpose behind the elimination of parental notification is to protect the nearly 150 girls who are sexually abused in their homes in the United States every day. How about you start putting some effort in to correcting the abuse problem instead of wasting our time with letters that actually make the problem worse... "

" This exact same letter ran in the Newsminer a day ago.

Guess Fink is a busy bee cutting & pasting. Too bad she doesn't realize what danger this puts our teens in. The real answer is sex education including abstinence, not government mandates that put our teens at risk. "
