Dear editor:

Just recently there was a letter to the editor from the Alaska Family Council regarding the 09PIMA bill. Thirty-four states have parental notification rights for an abortion procedure for minor women. 

The majority of Americans support this law regardless of their positions on abortion, according to the Harte-Hanks survey. Supporting choice in abortion does not remove parental responsibility for the health and care of minor-aged women. It is reasonable to get parents involved, especially if there is abuse in the family.

A minor-aged woman does not have to go back into the same abusive secretive situation. The bill allows for safeguards for the minor child and their rights as individuals. It seems like this only makes sense, and yet Alaskan parents have no voice legally to be notified of an abortion procedure of their minor child as the law stands now.

Please sign the petition to give Alaskans the right to vote on this bill before Dec. 1. More than 32,000 signatures are needed to put this bill on the ballot. Alaskans can go to Alaskansforparentalrights.org for information.
