Wasilla airport bolstered by federal money

WASILLA — More federal money is flooding in to the Wasilla Airport with plans to dramatically increase the footprint of the facility.

The city secured a $1.35 million grant from the Federal Aviation Administration to expand the airport’s apron. This money is matched by more than $35,000 from both the city and state.

The current size of the airport’s apron — the paved area off the runway — is hampering the facility’s growth, Wasilla Public Works Director Archie Giddings said in a previous interview. There is a waiting list for airplane tie-downs, and the amount of space the city can lease to commercial operations is limited.

In December, the city received $500,000 to work on the airport from a federal appropriation. At the time, Giddings said the money would be used to begin leveling a hill to allow for the apron expansion. Based on the numbers given at the time, the $1.42 million headed to the airport should complete the first phase of this project.

The improvements will have the added benefit of producing the dirt fill required for a future expansion of the runway, Giddings said. It may help the approach for a future access road as well.

The city is also working on a new airport master plan due out near the end of the year. The plan will identify what interest is out there for what type of uses on the new apron and what the city ultimately wants the airport to look like in 20 years, Giddings said.

“We just need to gauge what type of interest is out there. What kinds of use do we want at the airport? Do we want to tailor certain areas to specific businesses?” Giddings said. “We are trying to anticipate the market to see what trends are out there.”

" A beautiful landing strip for puddlejumpers. already 75 little airstrips around the valley. No thought about a real airport here in the valley. The Ted Stevens International Airport is stenciled over Point Mac Farms, maybe someday? "

" HA HA! Way to make a complete fool of yourself in a public forum, Zelinski! Please, go on! Tell me more of the wonder and magic that is California budgeting and that oh-so-wonderful economy of yours! Yes indeed...a true model for the rest of the country (on the peril of liberal spending policies, that is!) "

" The city should get some of that free money to help the Alaska Live Steamers with their move since they will booted off the property by airport expansion. Or better yet the citzens should pitch in and help "

" Zelinski - I find it hard to believe you had the nerve to actually write that. California is the biggest drain on federal funds this country has seen. How much federal aid comes into CA each year in the form of disataer relief? Cities in CA filing bankruptcy with the state, and now the state possibly filling with the feds. This is the problem with you liberals...it's never enough, instead you poke at a state that is self sufficient. Stay in CA, and stay off our boards. "

" Chris if you are a citizen of Alaska you do not have to worry about paying for anything in California. Your State, like most if not all Conservative States, does not pay more into the treasury that you take out. However California does have to pay for your states support and we would like it to stop. " Way back in ancient history "they" said "Why would they build the new airport way out there? Anchorage will never get that big..." News flash: Anchorage DID get that big.... "

" To Offsoapstone, I couldnt agree more. I can uncerstand the need to expand the airport, I guess. But taxes from the other 49 states should not be used to pay for it. Just like I don't want my tax money paying for that darn turtle tunnel in California I think it was. That is what is wrong with even our local officials. They feel that the government should help pay for these types of projects. I can just see the tax increase comming. "

" More Fed taxes dollars being spent. If wasllia needs a bigger and better airport they need to pay for it themselves. Everyone talks about the Fed deficit but no one wants to do anything about it. For those of you who say its a grant where do you think the money comes from. "
