Health care reform needed now

Published on Saturday, March 13, 2010 8:43 PM AKST

To the editor:

Please join me in phoning Sen. Mark Begich to encourage him to support and vote for the health care reform bill that is currently before Congress. This bill is a first step in reforming our present non-health care system.

With this health care reform, overall monies that have been historically wasted will be redirected to the economy. This reform bill will include all Americans who are currently insured as well as those with pre-existing conditions and those who have not been insured in the pats.

All Americans will have to pay into a pool so everyone can enjoy the comfort of good health. After all, the original idea of insurance coverage is that the more people who are covered, the cheaper per person.

The Senate has already passed a thoughtfully crafted health care bill, as has the House of Representatives. The work of the Senate and House supports the third and last step of passing the bill now. We do not need to scrap this bill and start over. The thinking and planning has been going on for well over 10 years. Now is the time to fix a system that is broken.

Please join me in phoning Sen. Begich to let him know we support his efforts to help all Americans and Alaskans.

Marilyn Russell,

president of League of Women Voters of Alaska

When the economy is good, Presidents love to take credit for it even if its because of their predecessor's policies, the previous Congress or other elements that were not in their control. You need to read more. Like most of us knew, and you can find out, the current economy goes back to W, Clinton, the past few Congresses, Wall St etc etc. "

Appalled? I just finished reading thru their website position papers and am not finding myself appalled.
Here are their position papers, clearly stated, and they seem very "American" to me:

And as you note, the uninsurede get care in the ER now and still will and either way the working and taxed pay for it. "

Then we might be able to forgive him for voting for the health care debacle. We won't be fooled by the democraps again. Mark is going to be toast after his first term. He should have been toast after his term as Mayor of Anchorage. "

Or maybe you're just so very, very impressed with the wonderful job the U.S. government does in exemplifying efficiency and accountability (Medicare?) And what fun is it to get the care you need when you need it when we could be like Canada where you get put on a waiting list for months (or longer) for that surgery you need...unless you're too old and its not deemed cost-effective anyway. Go have another sip of the Kool Aid, Mark. "

" Tort reforms only accounts for less than 1% of the cost of insurance. But, the number 1 reason for bankrupcy and home forecloser is because of medical bills. Without medical insurance, the sick will still continue to go to the hospital ER's as they always have, and we will still pay the increased premium to make up the difference the hospital must charge.

The insurance companies are lobbing hard against this for only one reason, it cuts into their profits.

Health care needs to pass. "

In order to afford the increasing cost of government flood insurance we were forced to reduce our home hazard coverage.
Government health insurance means If someone sneezes in Puerto Rico, your rates will rise sure as every time the Mississipi floods, Alaska's flood risk increases...WTF? "

I urge you all to contact your legislators - local, state, and federal - and demand tort reform now before it's too late! Take the focus off the health care bill and put it on tort reform. But wait, could this be something they are avoiding because most of them are lawyers - the ones who get rich without tort reform :( "

What you should have stated was"please join me in asking that Sen. Begich vote to destroy the greatest health care system in the world in order for us to . . . feel good."
The Canadians I worked with all had relatives, friends or they themselves had gone to the U.S. because they could not get the care in Canada.
Socialized medicine does not work. "

You want to change health care, open the borders for competition, tort reform to limit damages and try increasing the value of the dollar by not spending so much of the taxpayers money. "

" Health Care Reform, yes. Government takeover of health care NO. This bill will cost trillions of dollars. If this bill passes, count on seeing your tax rate continue to increase. Our kids and grandkids will be stuck with this bill. How can we continue with this type of spending? Look to taxes being 75-85% of your earnings as Obama continues his spending. Oh, of the 100B it supposedly saves, the cost of government for the month of February was over $200B. So savings would take care of about 2 weeks of expenses. "

At that time they can CHANGE the bill to what they want. How can you support a yes vote when it is not the final bill? The Senate and House need to finalize a bill then vote according to what the people they represent want. Health care should include eye and teeth care too. "
