On June 28, 2012, the U.S. Supreme Court voted 5–4 that the "The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act," exceeded Congress’s authority under the commerce clause, but the law was a permissible tax under the Constitution. The centerpiece of the act is the individual mandate, a provision that makes it mandatory for every citizen to purchase private health insurance or risk paying a tax penalty.
