To the editor:

The Anchorage Daily News ran a blurb about Meghan Vogel of West-Liberty-Salem High School in Ohio grabbing “foe” Arden McMath to prevent Miss McMath from falling in the last turn of the final lap in the Ohio State High School 3,200 meter race.

Miss Vogel then helped Miss McMath the final 20 meters and turned Miss McMath across the finish line ahead of her, so Miss McMath wouldn’t finish last.

Meghan Vogel obviously knew Arden McMath was not her “foe;” they were fellow competitors, running their hearts out and legs off, trying to win . . . for the love of it; for their schools, perhaps in efforts to earn college educations via scholarships, maybe for a future Olympic berth, or perhaps all of those.

The U.S. Olympic Committee was spot-on in awarding to Meghan Vogel its Jack Kelly Fair Play Award.

In knowing and showing how to play the game Meghan Vogel wound up (are you paying attention, Charlie?) — winning!
