Young runners compete in elementary meet

PALMER — More than 500 runners from 19 local schools competed in the annual Mat-Su Elementary Cross-Country Championships at Palmer High School’s Michael Janecek Running Trails last week.

The young athletes were separated into four different classes. The meet featured boys and girls races in the open, fourth-grade and fifth-grade classes.

A pair of runners from Machetanz Elementary and Sherrod Elementary won individual titles. Hunter Hayes of Machetanz was the fastest runner in the boys’ fifth-grade class, clocking a time of 14 minutes and 3 seconds. Fellow Machetanz student Kaden Ketchum won the boys’ fourth-grade race with a mark of 10:39.

Sherrod’s Sophie Wright finished first in the girls’ fourth-grade class, with a time of 12:36. Kelsey Geise, also of Sherrod, won the girls’ open class, with a time of 8:59.

Elaina Watson represented Pioneer Peak Elementary with a win in the girls’ fifth-grade race. Watson finished at the 15:12 mark.

Riley Regallo of Knik Elementary won the boys’ open class, with a time of 8:49.
