WASILLA — Aegis Comics of Alaska is hosting a special event for six local high school students who will be selling their original works from 11 to 6 p.m. Saturday, April 16.

Aegis Comics co-owner Luis Nieves said they feel honored to give local youth the opportunity to showcase their talent and get recognition for their dedication to their craft. He said that promoting local talent has always been one of their top priorities at the shop, and it’s encouraging to continue integrating their homegrown comic book shop into the community and growing alongside it.

“Watching new readers coming into the hobby and seeing new faces that are calling our place home is always awesome,” Nieves said.

Aegis Comics is participating in the 2022 Arctic Comic event in Anchorage April 29. He said this will be a particularly memorable year since this is the first full event since the pandemic started.

“We’re excited,” Nieves said.

Aegis Comics currently has a location in downtown Wasilla and a location on base at JBER. Nieves noted that they’re currently applying for funding to expand their operations even further with a third location in Palmer.

Nieves said they’re also looking forward to hosting the annual Valley Comic Con in October. He said they’ve been able to maintain and expand their overall efforts in spite of all the challenges in and around the pandemic thanks to the support of local residents.

“We barely survived, but we have a lot of community members that are helping and we’re very appreciative of that,” Nieves said. “If you don’t integrate with the community, you won’t make it.”
