WASILLA — Genesis Coffee Lab is celebrating the grand opening of their new tasting lounge with the public, offering special offers on drinks in addition to multiple opportunities for prizes throughout the weekend.
“My wife and I have literally been dreaming about doing this for 15 years. We believe Alaskans love coffee and my passion is to create a new culture. We want to change people's idea of what coffee is,” owner Jeffrey Chon said.
Genesis Coffee lab is a local wholesale and roasting company that imports their coffee beans directly from Ethiopia, commonly known as the “birthplace of coffee.”
Genesis distributes coffee to over a dozen Alaskan retail outlets, including Three Bears Alaska, in addition to their online sales and an outlet in Montana. The addition of a walk in lounge marks an all new era for the home brewed coffee company.
“It’s super cozy,” Chon said.
Chon explained that he and his staff utilize top of the line equipment to process the coffee onsite with an emphasis on the coffee cultivator’s culture, utilizing traditional tools and brewing methods with every cup of coffee served.
“We want people to taste organic coffee right from the source,” Chon said. “We roast our coffee 10 feet from our lab.”
Chon takes a lot of pride in his product, boasting to have some of the highest quality coffee not just in Alaska, but across the globe. He said their coffee is world class and their new lounge created to enjoy it rivals, if not surpasses coffee culture centric places like Seattle. He said all the equipment used on site is state of the art and they never “cut any corners.”
“The product speaks for itself,” Chon said. “You can't screw with wild.”
Chon, along with his family, friends and staff members celebrated a soft opening for the tasting lounge the previous weekend. As of Thursday, the lounge is officially open to the public Thursday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Genesis is celebrating the grand opening all weekend, offering a variety of prizes, including whole bean coffee, free drinks, steeped packets, dark chocolate from Rwanda, and merchandise.
Genesis offers cream and sugar, but encourages people to drink coffee the traditional Etheopian way which is black or with just a dash of milk.
“We really encourage people to taste what the coffee is supposed to taste like,” Chon said.
Chon said the genesis of Genesis Coffee stems from an unexpected, eye opening experience during a trip to Africa with his wife Moriah in May of 2005.
“We had no idea… It's kinda like Copper River salmon verses Atlantic farmed salmon,” Chon said. “I didn't know coffee could taste amazing with nothing in it.”
Chon said that giving back to Ethiopia is one of their top priorities. He said that the fact that they purchase their coffee directly from the source allows farmers and processors to earn a legitimate wage. He said they also invest in Ethiopian community development programs throughout the year.
