Chepo's groundbreaking

Chepo's owners and staff celebrate their new Wasilla location with a ground breaking ceremony.

WASILLA — Chepo’s Mexican Restaurant is moving their Wasilla location from their familiar place inside the plaza near Wendy’s and Alaska Industrial Hardware to Sun Mountain Avenue, near Litha. This new location will allow them to operate out of their own building with more space available.

“The main thing is the community and our employees. We’re very thankful for them,” Chepo’s manager Jose Nanez said.

Jose’s parents, Lucia and Jose “Chepo” Nanez, have owned and operated Chepo’s Mexican Restaurants in the Eagle River and Mat-Su Valley for over three decades.

Family, friends, and staff members celebrated the upcoming arrival of their new facility with a groundbreaking ceremony with Wasilla city officials and other guests Thursday, Aug. 19.

“It’s amazing I’m so happy,” Lucia said. “I’m very grateful for this opportunity.

According to Jose, they’re hoping to open the new location sometime during the summer or fall of 2022. He said it will nearly double their current available space, allowing them to continue meeting the growing demand.

“We’ve noticed that we’re the ‘party restaurant’ where people want to celebrate their birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, all that good stuff,” Jose said.

Jose noted that they’ll have several acres on the property that will feature over 120 parking spaces and about double the amount of their current staff. He said their staff’s dedication has helped them overcome the various challenges caused by the pandemic.

“We still have a solid core of staff that’s been getting us through this. It hasn’t been the easiest, but we only plan on getting stronger,” Jose said.

Jose said one of their main long-term goals for the new location is to take advantage of the newfound space to serve as a go-to venue for concerts and other events, ultimately looking to keep growing onward and upward.

“We want to provide something we do weekly every weekend during the summer,” Jose said.

Lucia said they plan to keep popular dishes that made them who they are while adding more variety with the upgrades kitchen space.

“We want to present more flavors from Mexico,” Lucia said.

In addition to running Chepo’s out of Wasilla and their original flagship location in Eagle River, Lucia and her family also run Senor Taco Mexican Grill, located at 860 South Roberts Street in Wasilla, near Home Depot.

“We appreciate all the support from the community. We’re still serving here thanks to them… We see them as a family the Chepos family,” Lucia said. “We’re still here and I want to see all my iterations continue with this beautiful dream.
