The resurrection of Jesus is the cornerstone of Christianity. At the very beginning of His ministry Jesus said, “Destroy this temple (His body) and in three days I will raise it up” (John 2:19). His entire ministry rested on the resurrection. God the Father declared Jesus to be His Son through the resurrection. “…who was declared the Son of God with power by the resurrection from the dead…” (Romans 1:4).
The evidence for the resurrection is post resurrection appearances. Jesus appeared to fourteen different groups of people after His resurrection. The apostles presented this evidence in their teaching, their writing (the New Testament) and their deaths. They died as martyrs proclaiming the truth of the resurrection.
Chuck Colson said, “I know the resurrection is a fact, and Watergate proved it to me. How? Because 12 men testified they had seen Jesus raised from the dead, then they proclaimed that truth for 40 years, never once denying it. Every one was beaten, tortured, stoned and put in prison. They would not have endured that if it weren’t true. Watergate embroiled 12 of the most powerful men in the world- and they couldn’t keep a lie for three weeks. You’re telling me 12 apostles could keep a lie for 40 years? Absolutely impossible.”
The final post resurrection appearance is in Revelation 1. John the apostle was 95 years old. He had not seen the Lord Jesus since the ascension in Acts 1. Sixty-five years have passed since John last saw the Lord Jesus. John was exiled on the island of Patmos. Patmos was a barren, windswept island in the Aegean Sea.
In Revelation 1:12-14 John focused upon seven amazing attributes of the resurrected Christ. First, Jesus has perfect wisdom. Verse 14 begins, “…His head and His hair were white like white wool, like snow…” The white hair represents age and experience. In the Bible age often brings wisdom. Jesus Christ has perfect wisdom.
Wisdom is the best goals achieved in the best possible means. Do you believe that God has the best plan for your life? He not only has the best plan, He also has the best means of achieving that plan.
Second, Jesus has perfect knowledge. Verse 14 also says, “…and His eyes were like a flame of fire.” Jesus has the x-ray eyes. We might say, “He has the laser eyes.” In Revelation 2 and 3 over and over Jesus says, “I know… I know… I know.” Jesus as God has omniscience or perfect knowledge. He knows everything about you. He is intimately acquainted with our lives.
Third, He has perfect holiness. “…His feet were like burnished bronze, when it has been made to glow in a furnace…” (verse 15) His feet were like glowing metal. Molten metal purifies everything around it. Jesus lived a perfect life. He died a perfect death. His sacrifice for sin satisfied the Father. He offers perfect righteousness.
Fourth, our Lord Jesus has perfect authority. Verse 15 concludes, “…His voice was like the sound of many waters…” John heard the ocean breaking upon the rocks. The voice of Jesus is authoritative. Jesus said, “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me,” John 10:27. A true believer is under the authority of Scripture.
Fifth, Jesus has perfect protection. “In His right hand He held seven stars…” (verse 16). The seven stars are the leaders of the seven churches (verse 20). Jesus Christ has His people in His right hand. The right hand is the place of strength. He is protecting you right now.
Sixth, Jesus fights for His people. “…out of His mouth came a sharp two edged sword…” (verse 16). Jesus has the atomic sword. He destroys His enemies with a word. The antichrist will be destroyed by the brightness of His coming and the breath of His mouth (2 Thessalonians 2:8).
Finally, Jesus has perfect glory. “…and His face was like the sun shining in is strength…” (verse 16) This is not a weak Alaskan sun! It is the sun of the Saharan desert- shining brightly with perfect strength.
The resurrection of Jesus guarantees our personal resurrection. This life is just the beginning. Let’s live for eternity. Let’s put our faith and trust in Christ’s finished work on the cross. Jesus defeated death. The future is very, very bright!
