The Mat-Su Borough set a coronavirus record Saturday and a pair of Mat-Su Borough School District schools will be closed at the beginning of the week due to recently reported cases.

A single-day high of 24 new COVID-19 cases were reported in the borough by the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services. The MSBSD also announced that both Colony High School and Mat-Su Career and Technical will be closed on both Monday and Tuesday. Positive cases were reported at Colony High on Oct. 7, Oct. 15 and Oct. 16. Positive cases were reported at Mat-Su Career Tech on Oct. 14 and Oct. 16. Positive cases were also reported at Swanson Elementary and Teeland Middle School. Eleven different schools — Birchtree Charter, Burchell High, Colony High, Finger Lake Elementary, Houston Jr/Sr High, Mat-Su Career Tech, Meadow Lakes, Sherrod Elementary and Teeland Middle — are considered medium risk by the district.

The total number of coronavirus cases in the borough stands at 819, with 483 in Wasilla and 262 in Palmer. A total of 290 cases are considered active,

Saturday’s total eclipses a previous high of 19 cases reported in a single day in the borough on Oct. 10. The borough has had 15 or more cases on five separate days since Sept. 28.

The Mat-Su is currently listed at the high alert level in the state. Of the borough’s total of 819, 158 have been reported in the last 14 days.

An additional 201 cases were reported in Alaska Saturday, marking the 24th straight day that more than 100 positive cases have been announced.
