WASILLA — Frontline Mission is moving forward with their annual Back to School Clothing Giveaway Aug. 7 and Aug. 8 with social distancing measures and added safety precautions in place.
“It’s not gonna be a mad rush all at once,” Frontline Mission program coordinator Matthew Sheets said. “Safety is our number one priority.”
Frontline has hosted this giveaway since 2014, gaining a strong following of people across the Valley who’ve come to rely on the event for their winter and school clothing.
Sheets noted that the theme of this giveaway revolves around back to school, it’s actually open to all ages and sizes. That means anyone can come by during the two day event.
“We’re gonna have a ton of clothes, literally tons and tons worth of clothing, thousands of pounds,” Sheets said. “Anyone can come, and we’re not gonna turn anyone away or anything like that.”
This large scale clothing giveaway looks different this year, but the goal remains the same, to help as many locals as possible prepare for the coming fall and winter seasons while reaching all ages and sizes.
All the clothes left from day one will be sanitized and moved to different locations so there’s a whole new selection to go through on day two.
Visitors are required to wear masks and gloves. Sheets said they will set aside materials for those in need. The indoor capacity is limited and visitors will be required to stay in their vehicles until they’re notified of their turn to come in.
There will also be clothes on display outdoors. Sheets said people will be able to get sack lunches on their way out.
“We love that we’re able to continue to do this even though it looks a lot different,” Sheets said. “Frontline’s mission is meeting the needs of the community.”
Visitors and volunteers are all receiving health screening. Sheets said they’re expecting a lot of people, and they’re always looking for more volunteers. Those interested, can visit their website or Facebook page.
Frontline Mission is located at the Wasilla Lake Church of the Nazarene on 2001 East Palmer-Wasilla Highway. The giveaway runs Friday and Saturday Aug. 7 and Aug. 8 from 1 to 4 p.m.
