JUNEAU — The Alaska House of Representatives moved one step closer to conducting business on Monday as the Committee on Committees passed a 20-17 vote of the House with three members absent.
House Speaker Louise Stutes (R-Kodiak) will chair the Committee on Committees and be joined by Representative Bryce Edgmon (I-Dillingham), Chris Tuck (D-Anchorage), Neal Foster (D-Nome), Kelly Merrick (R-Eagle River), Sara Rasmussen (R-Anchorage), and Mike Cronk (R-Northway). Following the initial motion to approve the Committee on Committees, Representative David Eastman (R-Wasilla) offered a Point of Order, noting that the meeting of the committee on committees did not occur the day after the election of Stutes as speaker and included seven members as opposed to five.
Following the House Floor Session, Status told reporters from the Anchorage Daily News and Alaska Public Media that a Majority is close to forming with 21 members including Merrick, who crossed over to vote in favor of Stutes as Speaker on Friday. Status said that Edgmon and Merrick will serve as Co-Chairs of the Finance Committee and that Chris Tuck will serve as Majority Leader.
