WASILLA — Saturday, Mat-Su Title Insurance Inc. is hosting its second annual fundraising canoe and kayak race, benefiting three local nonprofits. The public is invited to the event at the Mat-Su Resort.

“We wanted to start a give back event for our community,” Mat-Su Title Agency Marketing Manager and Event Coordinator Stacie Yates said.

There will be multiple canoe and kayak races on Wasilla Lake throughout the day for children and adults. The whole family will be able to race together at several types of events on the lake, including the rubber ducky races and the parent and child races.

The canoe and kayak races start at 12:30 p.m. The children’s races are first. After that, there will be a special heat between firefighters and police officers to kick off the adult races. Races are expected to run from 12:30 to 6 p.m. with live music and dancing outside from 6 to 10 p.m. There’s no cover charge.

Awards this year include: Fastest Canoe Team, Fastest Single Kayak, Fastest Double Kayak, Fastest Peddle Boat, Fastest Paddle Board, Mommy and Me Pedal Boat race (parent/child race ages 7 and under) Kids Pedal Boat race (ages 8 - 14) Best Costume/Themed boats.

The event begins with a $5 outdoor barbecue at 11 a.m. with numerous vendors tents to browse throughout the day. This will also be a time for day of registration. There will be several activities for the kids like face painting and a bounce house. Yates said that a lot of families showed up last year.

“I just love how many families came out,” Yates said.

Yates said that about 100 people came last year and they’re anticipating even more this year so they moved from their office to the Mat-Su Resort.

“It’s gonna be a lot of people,” Yates said.

All proceeds from this event will go to My House, MATSAR Search and Rescue and The Food Bank.

Yates said that it started last summer with MyHouse, the Valley’s homeless youth center. She said that she admired Founder and Executive Director Michelle Overstreet’s continued efforts helping homeless teens and decided to start an annual fundraiser for local nonprofits on the lake. MyHouse was the first recipient.

Racers are asked to bring their own canoes, kayaks and paddle boats. Those without boats can rent them on site on a first come, first serve basis.
