WASILLA — Authorities seized tens of thousands of dollars in heroin, meth and guns this month in a sweeping drug bust following at least a month of investigation.
Alaska State troopers with the Mat Su Valley Drug Enforcement Unit began investigating heroin distribution in early December following the death of a 22-year-old Houston man who died in his home after purchasing and ingesting heroin.
A series of arrests started on Dec. 2 with the arrest of Sawyer Gruben, 21, of Fairbanks, with 13.46 grams of heroin and two firearms as he left the Palmer residence of Hiram Ducasse, 26. Troopers and Palmer Police searched Ducasse’s house the next day, and came a way with 35 grams of heroin, a handgun and $8,226. Police also arrested Ducasse.
Two other subjects, Samuel Hubbard, 29, and Michael Trudeau, 28, both of Wasilla were also identified after that arrest. Hubbard was arraigned Dec. 18, after Troopers arrested Hubbard at his house on Dec. 11.
Hubbard’s arrest led to the Dec. 12 arrest of Deborah “Deb” Thomas, 54, of Desert Hot Springs, California, at the Anchorage airport. Troopers arrested Thomas and subsequently seized 107 grams of heroin “concealed internally,” according to a troopers press release.
In all, the investigation involved 11 search warrants and resulted in the seizure of 177 grams of heroin, 8.4 grams of meth (for a total street value of $53,000) nine guns (three of which previously reported as stolen), and $10,3.90 in cash.
This is a developing story; check back for updates.
