Lori Christine Wiertsema

Lori Christine Wiertsema

October 2 1964 — May 16 2021

Willow, Alaska

Lori passed from this world on Sunday morning to go home to be with the Lord and family that preceded her.

She was born in Tucson, AZ, and raised in a rural area near Tombstone where she graduated from high school. She enjoyed horses and rodeoing, especially Barrel Racing.

There she met her husband of 38 years, Steve Wiertsema. They soon wed and raised a family of three wonderful children.

She came to Alaska in October of 1992 to join Steve in starting a new life in the Last Frontier. She had a strong commitment to her new community. She served on the WACO board and in the Willow Fire Department, eventually achieving the Chief’s position. She hired on with the State of Alaska Division of Forestry, where she excelled in Wildland Fire Suppression, Heli-tack operations, and as a Fire Prevention Officer.

She was a tough as nails fighter who lost her battle with cancer after four and a half years.

She is survived by her husband Steve; children, Kayla, Kyle, and Keith; grandchildren, Cavan, Kiarra, Ainsley, and Briella; her three siblings, numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents and her parents, Ralph and Judy Boyer of Huachuca City, AZ.

She was a beautiful soul that will be greatly missed by all.

A memorial service and Celebration of Life will be held at 2 pm on June 5, 2021, at the Pat Newman Memorial Park in Willow, AK. Her remains will be scattered at several of her favorite locations in Alaska and then laid to rest at the Boyer Estate on the banks of the Babacomri River in Southern Arizona.

The Family asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to a children’s charity of the donor’s choice.
