Aidan Finch

Colony's Aidan Finch fires a shot on goal during a win over Palmer in January. On Feb. 20, Finch scored during a 7-0 win over Wasilla.

The Colony Knights capped an undefeated regular season with a 7-0 win over the Wasilla Warriors Feb. 20 at the Menard Arena in Wasilla.

Seven different Knights scored and six of the goals came in the second period. Kaden Ketchem led the Knights with a goal and four assists. Carsen Lantto added a goal and a pair of assists. Drake Gallagher, Peyton VanBuskirk, Aidan Finch, Tyler Keefe and Robbie Yundt also scored for the Knights.

Colony outshot Wasilla 35-11 in the win. Colony’s Malachi Mukaabya earned the 11-save shutout.

Colony and Wasilla have been restricted to only competition within the Mat-Su Borough School District. But that changes this week. Wasilla is hosting a Railbelt Conference tournament, which also features Fairbanks schools West Valley and Lathrop, at the Menard Thursday through Saturday. This will be the only postseason action for the Valley and Fairbanks teams, which skate at Alaska’s Division I level. The other Division I teams reside in Cook Inlet Conference and Anchorage School District. ASD opted to start its high school hockey season in March and continue through May due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

ASAA canceled the 2021 Division I state hockey tournament.

The Railbelt round-robin tournament starts Thursday with a pair of games. Colony faces West Valley at 11:15 a.m. and Wasilla plays Lathrop at 1:30 p.m. On Friday, West Valley meets Lathrop at 10:30 a.m. and Wasilla plays Colony at 6:15 p.m. On Saturday, Wasilla faces West Valley at noon and Colony meets Lathrop at 2:15 p.m.

Attendance is limited due to the district’s COVID-19 mitigation plans, but the games will be livestreamed on the Colony High School webpage, matsuk12.us/CHS.
