PALMER — The Mat-Su Miners split a six-game series on the Kenai Peninsula.
Mat-Su finished 3-3 against the Peninsula Oilers during the five-day stay in Kenai. Two of Mat-Su’s three wins came during a doubleheader sweep on July 6.
The Miners are 18-11 following the road trip and in second place in the Alaska Baseball League standings, two games behind the Anchorage Bucs.
Blake Peyton and Nolan Monaghan combined to throw a seven-inning shutout during a 4-0 win over the Oilers in the second part of the doubleheader. Peyton worked four innings, and didn’t allow a hit while striking out four. Monasghan, a former Wasilla High School standout, fanned four and allowed two hits over three innings of work. Monaghan also earned his first save of the summer.
The Miners jumped to an early lead with three runs in the first. Coby Boulware, Aaron Walters and Erik Webb all scored during the first frame. Five different players finished with one hit in the win.
Earlier in the, Mat-Su beat the Oilers 4-2. Boulware, Justin Kirby and Drew Williamson finished with two hits each. Webb scored twice. George Arias earned the win on the mound. Jacob McNairy notched the save.
The Miners also scored an extra-innings win over the Oilers on July 4. Ricky Martinez drove in a run in the top of the 11th to push the Miners to a 4-3 win. Williamson led Mat-Su with three hits in the victory. Robbie Brue had a pair of hits in his Mat-Su debut. Martinez also had a pair of hits.
Grant Sloan pitched two innings and earned the win in relief. Jacob McNairy notched his sixth save of the summer.
The Kenai club opened the series with a 5-4 win over the Miners on July 3. The Oilers also edged the Miners 2-1 on both July 5 and July 7.
The Miners return home to host the Chugiak Chinooks Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Hermon Brothers Field in Palmer.
