Palmer Moose

The Palmer Moose are now 2-0 at Machetanz Field in 2019.

PALMER — Last week, the Palmer Moose walked off the field frustrated following a loss at rival Colony. Friday, Palmer was eager to bounce back. And the Moose did in a big way.

Palmer cruised to a 47-0 noconfernece win over Kodiak at Machetanz Field in Palmer.

“The message this week was fight back after what happened last week,” Palmer head coach Tim Popowski said after the win.

Lavar Marshall helped Palmer improve to 2-2 overall, rushing for a game-high 197 yards and two scores. Fullback Duston Corbin finished with 50 yards and a touchdown on only four carries. Jayden Christiansen added 38 yards on the ground.

“Our offense looked good. They were stacking the box pretty good against us, which we expected. For us to be able to run the ball up the middle as well as we did, I was really happy with that. A lot of guys were doing good things up front,” Popowski said.

Palmer also used three quarterbacks in the win. Ben Simmerman, Dae Osiensky and Connor Heal all saw time behind center.

“We want to build that depth there. We’ve got some kids who have some different unique skills,” Popowski said.

Popowski said he saw good things from each of the quarterbacks. All three finished with a touchdown pass.

Popowski said using three signal callers aligned with a priority for the game, developing depth.

“We have some different looks, but at the same time we wanted to build some depth,” Popowski said.

Carson Helm, Manny Lovejoy and Ethan Bleakney each had a touchdown catch for the Moose. Dawson VanTassel led Palmer with two catches for 35 yards.

Popowski also praised the work of Palmer’s defense, which pitched the shutout and held Kodiak to 78 yards rushing and seven yards passing.

“We’re doing some really good things defensively. The kids are really getting after the ball,” Popowski said.

Marshall gave Palmer the 7-0 lead late in the first quarter with a 4-yard touchdown run. Palmer added four touchdowns in the second quarter, including a defensive score. Lovejoy returned an interception 64 yards for a touchdown with 13 seconds left in the half.

Connor Heal connected with Carson Helm on a 16-yard touchdown pass on the second play of the second quarter to give the Moose the 14-0 lead. Less than two minutes later, Palmer scored again with Corbin’s 1-yard run. Marshall added a 6-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.

Palmer quarterbacks tossed a pair of scores in the second half. Lovejoy scored for the second time of the game, hauling in a 22-yard touchdown pass from Simmerman midway through the third. In the fourth, Osiensky hit Bleakney for a 10-yard score.

The Moose now look ahead to three straight conference games. Palmer hosts North Pole and will travel to Fairbanks in back-to-back weeks to play West Valley and Lathrop.

“We’re excited for it,” Popowski said.
