PALMER — Lars Arneson defended his title in style, posting the second-fastest time in Pioneer Ridge Vertical Mile history on Sunday in Palmer.

Just four days after placing seventh in his debut at the Mount Marathon Race, the 28-year-old Arneson covered the challenging course in 1 hour, 11 minutes and 12 seconds.

The fifth annual race, dubbed the vertical mile because it ascends 5,300 feet in just 4.5 miles, had 56 finishers in windy conditions that includes spats of rain but moderate temperatures, a contrast to the near-80-degree weather seen in the Mat-Su Valley just the day before.

Rickey Gates, a Colorado native who came to Alaska to compete in Mount Marathon, placed second in 1:15:04 after holding off Peter Mamrol by 36 seconds.

Robin Beebee, 42, of Anchorage claimed the women’s win in 1:36:51. Rachel James, making her return to Alaskan mountain running after a hiatus that lasted a decade, placed runner-up in 1:39:34 while Kayla Munday took third in 1:42:16.
