Houston was in search of its first trip to the 3A boys basketball title game in more than 30 years, and the Hawks fell just short.

Nome stunned the top-seeded Hawks 62-55 during the semifinal round of the ASAA/First National Bank 3A Boys State Basketball Championships Thursday evening at the Alaska Airlines Center in Anchorage.

Nome jumped to a 19-10 first-quarter lead and closed the game on a 24-18 run. The previously undefeated Hawks dropped to 23-1.

Hayden Howard led Houston with 14 points. Braden Cork and Hunter Jefferson scored 12 each, and Cole Taylor added 10,

Houston will play Valdez Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in the third-place game. Fourth-seeded Nome will meet second-seeded Grace Christian in the 3A title game.

In 3A girls action, Redingtion made school history. The Huskies beat Bethel 36-35 in the consolation semifinals. It was their first state tournament win.

Lexi Seymore hit four three-pointers and scored a game-high 22 points.

The Huskies will play Valdez Friday at 9:30 a.m, in the fourth-place game.
