It’s getting to be that time of year! I received an email from Fish and Game discussing items pertinent to the upcoming bear baiting season.
Quoting from the advisory announcement; “Bear bait stations may be registered 15 days prior to the start of the season. Similar to spring 2022, hunters will be able to call local Fish and Game offices to register bait sites or register in person at an ADF&G office. If registering by phone, hunters will be emailed or mailed the permit and signs to use bait to take bears. The signs are required to be posted at your station when you go into the field, so plan accordingly.”
Continuing, “Hunters should call the office nearest the location they intend to bait, and when registering bait stations must verbally agree to the conditions of the permit. You may not place bait at your site until the season is open and you have received your permit. For more information on using bait or scent lures to take bears please see pages 26 and 27 of the 2022-2023 Alaska Hunting Regulations, also available at hunt.alaska.gov.”
When you call to register your site(s), Fish and Game asks that you have your hunting license number and the GPS location of your baiting site(s), if possible. The department prefers to spread out the baiting efforts rather than stack several sites on top of each other. Having the specific coordinates of the site location also allows law enforcement to check for illegal use and to monitor whether the site was properly cleaned up after the season, which opens April 15th.
Properly operating and hunting a bait site can be a lot of work. It’s not the “cakewalk” many folks envision it to be. There are also restrictions on where a bait site can be located, so read the hunting regulations to avoid any problems.
When I was actively baiting, my site was located on the west side of the Susitna River. I had a smaller riverboat then and used it to access the site using narrow channels to get the required distance off the main river. I think the larger boat I have now would make accessing the site difficult, if not impossible. I had a tough enough time getting there in the smaller boat!
I need to do some serious prospecting for a new site on this side of the river and accessible by ATV or side-by-side. I’ve got some areas in mind, but don’t have the necessary information to register a site for this season.
I wrote previously about the danger President Biden poses to legal gun ownership through his use of Executive Orders to push his gun control agenda. I received this email from a reliable source explaining his continuing attempts to eliminate legal gun ownership in this country.
Quoting from the email, “President Biden is expected to announce an executive order on Tuesday that would expand HYPERLINK "https://www.foxnews.com/politics/biden-vows-ban-assault-weapons-come-hell-high-water" \t "_blank" background checks to more firearm sales by expanding the statutory definition of a firearms dealer, the White House said.”
“Biden is set to sign the order during a trip to HYPERLINK "https://www.foxnews.com/us/police-update-monterey-park-shooting-identify-weapons-lunar-new-year-assault" \t "_blank" Monterey Park, California, where he will meet with families and the community impacted by the mass shooting that killed 11 and injured nine others in January. The White House said the executive order will bring the U.S. ‘as close to universal background checks as possible’ without additional legislation.”
“Under the executive order, Biden is also directing Attorney General Merrick Garland to develop and implement a plan to prevent former federally licensed firearms dealers, whose licenses have been revoked or surrendered, from continuing to engage in the business of dealing in firearms.”
“The order will also improve public awareness and increase the use of extreme protection, like ‘red flag’ laws and safe storage of firearms.”
“Biden is directing his cabinet to encourage the ‘effective use’ of those orders, by partnering with law enforcement, health care providers, educators and other community leaders. Biden is also directing members of his cabinet to expand existing federal campaigns and efforts to promote safe storage of firearms.”
“The order will also direct the secretary of transportation, in consultation with the Department of Justice, to work to ‘reduce the loss or theft of firearms during shipment,’ and to improve the reporting of such losses or thefts by engaging with carriers and shippers.”
“The White House said the order will also hold the gun industry ‘accountable,’ by providing the public and policymakers with ‘more information regarding federally licensed firearms dealers who are violating the law.’"
