PALMER — A pair of Valley standouts battled at the front of the pack, and a Palmer freshman prevailed.

Katey Houser edged Wasilla senior Allison VanPelt by a mere two seconds to win the Frank Dieckgraeff Invitational Friday in Seward.

Houser, who finished as the runner-up in the Bartlett Invitational State Preview last week, earned her first career high school gold with a time of 19 minutes, 19 seconds. VanPelt finished second at 19:21.

VanPelt was one of a pair of Valley runners to post runner-up finishes. Colony junior Gavin Block used a time of 17:29 to place second in the varsity boys race. Block also helped Colony finish second in the team standings.

Block and the Knights finished with 72 total points, two shy of Anchorage Christian. Sophomore Lane Meier (17:38) was sixth.

The Palmer girls were also second in the team standings. Sophia Nowers also grabbed a top-10 finish, placing ninth with a time of 21:17. Lydia Ortiz was 13th (21:50) and Nina Kalytiak (21:57) placed 15th.

Freshman Landon Hayes led the Wasilla boys with an 11th-place finish. Palmer senior Connor Owens led the Moose boys, with a 14th-place finish.
