Palmer High senior Katey Houser was challenged by a pair of freshmen, but the veteran prevailed.

Houser used a time of 19 minutes, 47 seconds to win the varsity girls race during the Colony Invitational cross-country running meet Aug. 28 at Colony High School. Grace Christian’s Kai Waythomas and Colony’s Ella Hopkins, a pair of ninth-graders, were on Houser’s heels as Houser sprinted to the finish line. Waythomas was second at 19:48 and Hopkins placed third with a time of 19:52.

Houser won her second race of the season. She opened her senior year with a first-place finish in the Wasilla Invitational.

Four Valley runners placed in the top 10 of the girls race. Colony junior Shea Alaniva (21:31) was sixth and Redington sophomore Mya Campbell (21:53) placed fifth.

Palmer sophomore Fischer Adams led Valley athletes with a runner-up finish in the varsity boys race, with a time of 16:41. Colony junior Zac Cheyette (17:07) was sixth, Wasilla senior Landon Hayes (17:14) placed seventh and Palmer sophomore Tobin Miller (17:24) finished 10th.
