The Chugiak Mustangs used a four-run fifth to score a 6-4 victory over the Palmer Pioneers Wednesday night at Hermon Brothers Field in Palmer.

Palmer answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning, but fell short and dropped to 0-1 in league play in the Alliance Baseball League. The Pioneers were 4-4 in nonleague play to start the season.

Drake Gallagher and Owen Hayes both scored on an error in the fifth to cut Chugiak’s lead to 6-4. The Pioneers fell behind 2-0 in the first, but tied the score with a pair in the second.

Hayes scored on a Ben Alley ground out to put the Pioneers on the scoreboard. Evan Walker scored on an Anthony Jones bloop single to tie the score.

Hayes led the Pioneers with two runs scored in the loss. Hayes, Jones, Bryant Marks and Brady Shults each had a hit for Palmer.

Road Warriors cruise to a pair of wins in Kenai

The Wasilla Road Warriors made the trek to Kenai and will return to the Valley with a pair of lopsided wins. Wasilla opened the doubleheader Wednesday with a 15-0 league win and capped it with an 18-5 victory over the Kenai Twins in nonleague play.

Wasilla improved to 9-0 ovearll and 1-0 in league play. The Warriors have scored 51 total runs combined in their last three days.

Logan Bailey and Clayton Boyett combined for a one-hit shutout during the five-inning win in league play.

They combined to strike out nine Twins and did not walk a batter.

Bailey worked 3 1/3, while Boyett pitched the final 1 2/3 innings.

Boyett also finished 3 for 4 at the plate with five driven in and three runs scored. Waylon Payne was 3 for 3 with two RBI and a run. Andre Brown finished with two runs, two hits, and two RBI.

Wasilla scored nine runs in the fourth during the 18-5 nonleague victory. Nolan Murphy was 2 for 4 with three runs and three RBI. Bryce Frazier had two hits, two walks, two runs and two RBI. AJ Camacho added two runs and two RBI.
