PALMER — Allison VanPelt led all Valley athletes at the ASAA/First National Bank State Track and Field Championships at Palmer High School Saturday.

VanPelt took the Division 1 girls’ 800-meter title with a time of 2 minutes, 18.95 seconds. VanPelt also took third place in the 1,600. The South girls and Chugiak boys took home Division 1 team titles and the Kenai girls and Anchorage Christian boys won Division II team championships.

VanPelt stayed in the lead pack of the 1,600-meter run alongside West Valley’s Kendall Kramer and South’s Ava Earl. VanPelt pushed the pace starting in the second lap and conserved her energy for the final sprint. Kramer and Earl broke away with Kramer getting the edge at the finish line in 4:56, just five seconds ahead of VanPelt in third place.

“To do that type of a lineup when you’ve got prelims in the 4 and the 8 on the first day and then you’ve got a full lineup of those long mid distances on the second day, so I’m actually really excited to give her the opportunity to get some of that competition to feel the pressure,” said Wasilla coach Leslie Varys.

VanPelt responded to the pressure in the 800-meter run, winning the only individual state title for any Valley athlete in a time of 2:18.

“I like running the shorter distances because I’m an all-around athlete. I have speed and at the same time I can keep it for long distances,” VanPelt said.

VanPelt outscored the rest of her Wasilla teammates combined. The Palmer girls led the team standings for Valley teams in ninth. The Moose were followed by Wasilla in 15th and Colony in 19th.

While VanPelt led the pack, the Warriors posted a handful of top-10 finishes. Wyatt Helton took fourth in the 110-meter hurdles and the 400-meter relay team of Chevy Hicks, Helton, Anthony Matthews and Mason Reynolds took fifth with a time of 45.51. The Warriors 800-meter relay team of Isaac Wagle, Gavin Conant, Hunter Hayes and Mason Reynolds took sixth. Dylan Jeffus led the Warriors in the field events.

“For a freshman to come in here and he’s competing against some senior top notch competition, they’ve been doing this for four years it’s really very, very impressive,” said Varys of Jeffus.

Jeffus took seventh place in the long jump with a jump of 19 feet, three quarters of an inch. Jeffus also placed fourth in the high jump at 5-foot-10. Jeffus came in one place and two inches behind Colony senior Julian McPhail, who cleared 6-0 for third place.

“It’s not like you have in the back of your mind you’ve got three more meets. Today is the day, and I think that helps a lot of kids just let it go because you have nothing to lose at this point,” said Colony Head Coach Charlie Yoder.

The Knights did much of their team scoring in the field events, led by McPhail. In the triple jump, Brayden Reeves placed seventh for the boys and Monica Bustillos placed eighth for the girls. Hanna Tennesen placed seventh in the shot put and Yoder was particularly proud of Audrey Johnston’s 14th place finish in the high jump in only her first year competing in the event. In the 400-meter run for the Knights, Zane Vrvilo placed sixth and Landis Erwin took seventh. Felix Robertson placed sixth in the 110-meter Hurdles and Abigail Kenley placed seventh in the 100-meter dash. Yoder said that all of the Colony runners achieved personal records and was impressed with Vrvilo’s effort running through an injury.

“State is probably the most relaxing meet of all for us,” Yoder said. “We can’t get on the field so our coaching is pretty much done. We can make sure kids get there but we’ve trained them through the whole season and it’s up to them now. I put my stopwatch away, I’m just watching and cheering kids on and basically enjoying the meet.”

Palmer Senior Connor Owens opted to skip the long distance running and focus on hurdles for the spring. Owens joined a crowd of Valley competitors in the 110-meter hurdles where he placed seventh.

“We don’t do the whole, like distance running stuff we did in cross country so I’ll do hurdles because I’m better at it and it’s fun,” Owens said.

Owens also placed seventh in the 300-meter hurdles. Palmer senior Teanna Nicholai took home both of the individual top-five finishes for the Moose, and was also featured on Palmer’s outstanding relay teams. Nicholai took fifth in the shot put on Friday and placed second in the 100-meter dash on Saturday with a time of 12.78. Nicholai ran the anchor leg on Palmer’s second-place 400 relay team. Palmer’s Kristin Beames, Nicholai, Shandra Cutsforth and Gretchen Snelders also placed second in the 1,600 relay. The Moose placed sixth in the 800 relay and eighth in the 3.200 relay.

Following a stellar career in both cross-country running and track, VanPelt finished her career as a champion. She thanked her coaches for all of their support in pushing her to run faster. VanPelt will run at Colorado State University-Pueblo next fall.

“They’ve been the best coaches that I have had so far because they’re always in practice pushing you every day,” VanPelt said. “If you have a bad race they are always preparing you for the next race to be even better.”
