WASILLA — J. Silva, a.k.a. Alaska Redd, is releasing his latest album, “O.G.A.R. (O.G. Alaska Redd)” April 20.
“O.G.A.R.” is Silva’s sixth full-length studio album. It’s coming out two decades after his debut album was released. He said the style and overall outcome of the album reflect elements of the early days of his career and the evolution of his sound and growth as an artist. He said it’s a testament to his determination to keep evolving as an Alaskan emcee.
Silva said that his new album is set with darker tones and features 12 tracks with guest appearances of Alaska’s most talented artists and producers such as Stevie Stone and Krizz Kaliko, formerly of Tech N9NE’s Strange Music.
“I feel like I truly showcased my lyrical talent and growth on this project while bringing it back to the roots and core sounds and vibes that I’m originally known for. While I will always remain humble, I also feel like it’s important to poke your chest out a little,” Silva said. “I just like the way it flows from the start all the way to the end.”
Silva is one of the most respected and longest-standing hip-hop artists in the state. He’s recognized by many as one of the pioneering performers that elevated Alaska’s overall hip-hip scene. He continues to work building the scene while helping up-and-coming local artists.
“He’s very much an Alaskan artist. There’s a lot that wouldn’t have happened without Redd,” Valley rapper and AK Rhymefest owner Devon Shaw said.
Silva said that he feels fortunate for his career’s longevity and all the exciting opportunities that he encountered along the way, including the chance to work with some of his hip-hop heroes like E-40.
“You gotta keep sharpening your sword,” Silva said. “I had a vision. I had to bring the culture to us.”
“O.G.A.R.” will be released on CD and online platforms such as Spotify and iTunes.
