PALMER — For April, the Palmer Art Walk is celebrating the literary arts, with each stop featuring something for fans of the written word. Fireside Books put together a word jumble challenge. Art Walkers will collect words they can use to create their own unique literary creations that will make them eligible for the Art Walk raffle. Some locations will also host authors.
The Art Walk runs 2-6 p.m., Saturday. The Art Walk’s mobile app is now working and available free in both the GooglePlay and Apple App stores.
Fireside Books will host an interactive poetry event, inviting art walkers to participate in a melodramatic recreation of "The Shooting of Dan McGrew" by Robert Service. Performances repeat throughout the Art Walk.
The shop will display a series of special poems with clothing themes. To earn words for the word jumble challenge, visitors have to read and recite one of the poems.
Pam and Carrie will provide a display of information and answer your questions about massage. Two therapists will provide chair and foot massage at the discounted rate of $1 per minute, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. They will also have drawings at 4 and 6 p.m. for two 20-minute chair massages. The Shane Lamb Gallery will host Alaskan artist Sandra Cook of SL Cook Pottery & Fiber Werks from 2-6 p.m. Cook is selling hand-built earthenware pottery. Each plate, bowl and serving piece is hand-built and of her own distinctive designs using majolica, a shiny white glaze on which she paints bright and colorful native plant life and other decorative patterns. She will also have handspun and hand-dyed wool and wool blend yarn for sale.
This collective of artisans and crafters will have several items on display and available for purchase inside the Turkey Red banquet room.
Side Kicks Gifts will host two local authors: Mukkove Johnson, children’s Christian author of “Easter is About Jesus: Family Devotions for the Easter Season” as well as “Christmas is About Jesus: An Advent Devotional,” from 2-6 p.m. and Cory Williamson, Christian author of “Warriors are Made in His Sovereignty” from 4-6 p.m.
This week the quilters will be gearing up for their major fundraiser: the Alaska State Fair. The Valley Quilters Guild has a booth at the fair every year as a way to raise funds and showcase their members' creativeness and expertise. At April's open sew, the quilters will be sewing for the fair booth. They’ll have tickets for the annual raffle quilt, a custom-made, custom-quilted, queen bed sized quilt made by guild members.
The station hosts the opening of the second show of pencil, charcoal and chalk drawings by Mat-Su College art students of Dr. Felicia Desimini, coordinator of the college’s fine arts department. After the opening, the show will run April 11-23 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Mondays through Fridays.
Madd Matters will feature "Functional Art.” Special Second Saturday store hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The artist this month will be Lori Teich, a painter that does acrylic on canvas. Born and raised in the Valley, Teich only began painting a year ago when her father asked her to paint something on an ugly wall at home. She has since sold more than 300 paintings.
The museum will feature its newest exhibit “The Art of Hi Fidelity,” a visual history describing the development and evolution of LP cover art. Light refreshments catered by Turkey Red will be served. The museum will also offer visitors an opportunity to decorate their own free bookmarks and kites with all supplies provided.
This is the first time Thrifters Rock will be joining the Art Walk. The store recently moved to a new and larger location off of the Palmer-Wasilla Hwy. It will offer free classes to turn an old book into a decorative birdhouse. Classes will be start every hour from 2-5 p.m., and all materials will be provided. Each class can accommodate 10 people, so call Thrifters Rock at 745-7625 to sign up if you want a guaranteed space.
