Palmer Museum and Visitor Center is offering a series of winter arts workshops starting next month. Here's a rundown:
Using yarn or string, learn a simple weaving technique to make bracelets, pins, and necklaces. Other skills taught include weaving a basic form, adding embellishments like ribbons and buttons, and finishing techniques. Students provide some of their own materials.
Ages 12 and up.
Date: Feb. 4, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Cost: $20 members, $25 for non-members. Materials: $5
Students will get the necessary materials and basic techniques to complete one basket. Twined classes use techniques of Tlingit, Haida and Aleut weavers, coiled weaving comes from the Yupik people, and pine needle classes rely on southeastern weaving techniques. Materials will be purchased from instructor.
Ages 13 and up
Twined: Feb. 11 from 3 to 4:30 p.m.
Coiled: Feb. 18 from 3 to 4:30 p.m.
Cost: $25 for members, $30 for non-members
Pine Needle: Feb. 25 from 3 to 4:30 p.m.
Cost: $30 for members, $35 for non-members.
Learn how to safely power carve wood into useable arts and crafts while gaining knowledge of the types of tools used, tips of the trade, wood selection and safety. Learn how to use a variety of power carving tools to make a bowl, shrimp or butterfly out of a block of wood.
Ages 16+ (with parental approval).
Date: March 10 from 9 to 5 p.m.
Cost: $50 for members, $55 for non-members. Materials: $105 or more
Learn basic hand techniques necessary for sewing with fur and leather as used by Alaska Natives. Work with patterns from Arctic regions, how to select skins and leather, and how to create lining and trim rabbit or beaver hats. Students will receive a supply list for the class and will be responsible for purchasing them.
Cost: $90 for members, $95 for non-members
Fur Hats: March 10, 17, 24 and 31; 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Materials: $20 to $125
Baby Booties: Dates: April 7, 14, 21 and 28; 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Materials: $25 to $50
Learn basic techniques of oil painting from the various types of tools and equipment used, to mixing paint, to completing a painting from start to finish. Each student will complete one painting.
Ages 13+.
Date: Feb. 25, March 3; 10 to 1 p.m.
Cost: $40 for members and $45 for non-members. Materials: $25
Class covers arranging colors in harmonies or contrasts and basic silk techniques. Students experiment painting different combinations on small silk pieces o0r a larger items as time allows.
Ages 15 and older.
Date: April 21, 2 to 6 p.m.
Cost: $30 members/$35 non-members Materials: $20
