Barbara Ruth Moore Nord
Barbara Ruth Moore Nord, 74, passed away at home on Lazy Mountain, Alaska, on June 8, 2022 due to complications from Mantle Cell Lymphoma. Barbara was born on November 3, 1947 in Stromsburg, Nebraska to Keith and Ruth Moore. She graduated from Benedict High School and earned her bachelor’s degree from Ball State University. Barbara always had a passion for travel and adventure.
Shortly after graduating she followed her dream of moving to Alaska and becoming a teacher. She started teaching at Palmer High School in 1970 where she taught for over 30 years. She married fellow Palmer High School teacher LeRoy Nord on December 29, 1970. Barbara and LeRoy had three children, Leed, Sabra, and Cerise. Barbara delighted in watching her children and grandchildren participate in various events and could always be counted on to provide an honest and often humorous review of their performance.
Education was Barbara’s lifelong passion, and her desire to teach and learn never wavered. Her legacy lives on in the hundreds of students she impacted throughout her lifetime. Her most passionate words to her government classes were that the principle of democracy is to recognize the worth and dignity of the individual. She wrote that her purpose was “…to face my fears, to open my eyes and see, to open my ears and hear, to open my mind and learn, and to open my heart and care”.
She is survived by her husband LeRoy Nord; three children Leed Nord, Sabra (Chris) Sturgis, Cerise (Lisa) Nord; six grandchildren, Samuel and Sawyer Sturgis, Jackson, Samuel, Lexi and Noah Larsen; three siblings, Norma (Bob) Lund, Judy (Richard) Reierson, Dennis (Lise) Moore; in-laws Robert Nord, Richard (Barbara) Nord, and Bonnie Stassen; numerous nieces and nephews; and wonderful friends who became family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and by her brother Dale Moore.
The best way to honor her is to take an adventure, enjoy nature, and support education. Organizations that she felt passionately about supporting include Best Friends Animal Society and Planned Parenthood. To properly celebrate her life the family will be planning a service and party at a later date. To receive information on services or share memories, please email celebratebarbnord@gmail.com
