Public bulletin boards are such an “old school” thing but it still functions in Palmer. There are a variety of public bulletin boards, which remain around town. They are comforting reminders of local events, brochures, notices, and wanted flyers. After an exhaustive Palmer survey and investigation, it is determined that the bulletin board, directly inside the Kolivosky Center’s side entrance, is indeed the prime location in Palmer. It is tattered from use and over burdened with information, but those descriptors are actually what define “a well-used bulletin board;” pristine and crisp does not necessarily denote use. Without a doubt there are other useful bulletin boards in Palmer, but it does seem as if the Kolivosky board is the top. Other useful bulletin boards are in the main hall of Kolivosky Center, the library, Fred Meyers, Valley Hotel, and near Turkey Red, at the Palmer Downtown Plaza.
+10,000 Local Years of Wisdom—Palmer “crowd-sourced information” reveals that there is much local wisdom behind crowd consensus. A brief question on the Palmer Alaska Buzz Facebook page—about the length of time residing in the Palmer greater area— revealed that over 350 people responded to the question. And the total years locally represented are 10,062!!!!! This is a lot of collective wisdom!
The Palmer Alaska Buzz has well over 8000 members. And 350 responses is a pretty small percentage of the total. However being able to dig down—and tap into—such a treasure of local wisdom is a valuable resource. In fact, this is proof of monitored, yet positive and interactive—locally based— social media platform.
The Palmer Alaska Buzz Facebook group was the precursor to this Frontiersman Newspaper column. Both the Publisher and Editor approached me to write a weekly column, based in part on the same type of information which appears hourly in the electronic world of the Palmer Alaska Buzz. I am happy to do it because I believe strongly in community and communication. This has resonated all my life—at some level—both in vocation and profession. Consulting, connecting and compiling community wisdom and directives is a good thing to share.
