PALMER — If you’ve been putting off a trip to the landfill, it might behoove you to make it this weekend.
Two closures are planned this month at the Mat-Su Borough landfill to allow for the replacement of scales at the entryway off of 49th State Street, borough officials said. The landfill will be closed Monday and reopen from April 10 to 12, then close again between April 13 and 16.
Repairs costing about $300,000 are necessary because of simple wear-and-tear, said landfill manager Macey “Butchy” Shapiro.
“The scales that are in there are on their last leg,” he said.
The three open days in the middle are primarily designed to allow people to drop off garbage during the weekend.
Borough officials initially considered simply re-directing around the lanes during the replacement, but the volume of cars and trucks to the landfill — as many as 12,000 vehicles per month — made that unfeasible, Shapiro said.
Borough officials will be able to accept your refuse at one of several transfer stations in Butte, Big Lake, Eureka, Gracious House, Lake Louise, Long Rifle, McLaren River Lodge, Point MacKenzie, Sutton, Talkeetna, or Willow.
Maps and directions to the nearest transfer site are available at bit.ly/1CYeViD.
The closure will affect primarily residential and small commercial disposal projects. Landfill customers with automated scale accounts will be able to use the automated scale entrance, borough officials said.
Officials are willing to make accommodations during the scheduled closing, but only for “garbage emergencies,” Shapiro said.
