Borough Mayor vetoes extra funding for schools

PALMER — The Mat-Su Borough Assembly’s decision two weeks ago to not only keep education funding at the level it was at, but kick in another $1.5 million from the school site reserve for the 2017-18 fiscal year.

But Tuesday night, Borough Mayor Vern Halter vetoed the amendment, thus erasing the $1.5 million in extra funding, so long as his veto could withstand an override.

Five of the seven assembly members would have needed to vote for the override to keep the funding, but members Randall Kowalke, Steve Colligan and George McKee all voted with Halter, meaning the school budget will return to the $55,841,000 appropriated in the original proposal of borough manager John Moosey.
