The Better Business Bureaus (BBB) recently announced findings from a new investigation that revealed that the total number of phishing attacks nearly doubled in 2023.
According to a press release, over 9,000 phishing attacks impacted people last year based on information from the BBB Scam Tracker reports. The press release cited advancing technology and techniques that make it easier for attackers to target individuals and businesses for the rise in
phishing attacks.
BBB reported the following key findings:
“Scam Tracker reports of phishing attacks surpassed 9,000 in 2023, nearly double the previous year and a record high. Reports suggest another record-breaking year is likely in 2024. Phishing remains successful due to its adaptability across different communication platforms. Both individuals and businesses are targeted by phishing scams, with business losses totaling in the billions over the past three years, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and BBB Scam Tracker reports. The constantly evolving nature of phishing techniques makes it challenging for both the public and authorities to stay ahead of the necessary defenses.”
