MAT-SU — Ah, Yuletide. It brings with it fragrances and flavors of savory feasts, the crunching of freshly fallen snow, the reverberating cheers of goodwill, children exuding excitement with the advent of Christmas and the sounds. The sounds are many — cars honking, snowmachines revving, snowblowers growling, ravens cawing, dogs barking, bands playing, bells ringing and yes, carolers and choirs singing.

One of the ways to allow the spirit of Christmas to move you is to celebrate the season with music. Mat-Su Community Chorus invites you to the opening of its 2013-14 concert season with “Christmas Classics” at 4 p.m., Dec. 8 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Palmer

Just as Yuletide has endured and evolved through the ages, so has the music of the season. In other words, classics: something noteworthy and worth remembering. From sacred chants to madrigals and carols to classical masters (Bach, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, etc.), Christmas music has transcended the annals of human history to become well-known compositions loved by many. When listened to or sung along with, they brighten the winter darkness of Alaska’s boreal nights.

Come take a musicological journey with the chorus. Starting with Bach, the audience is transported on melodious waves through time and space, spending moments with Mozart and Tchaikovsky and arriving at the final destination with Holiday Pops.

“Christmas Classics” will be preformed by the Mat-Su Community Chorus and be conducted by the multi-talented Megan Webb. St. John’s Lutheran Church will host the chorus. Admission is $5 per person with seniors and students free of charge.

“Christmas Classics” will showcase familiar music of the season, along with featured instrumentalists and vocalists and, of course, a few fun surprises smattered here and there throughout the performance.

This is a very busy time of year for all, but why not make space in your schedule to enjoy the Yule season with a joyful heart and the inspirational music of Christmas? Now that’s a classic!
