Dealing with dogs that beg

You are about to sit down to have a tasty dinner, and before your body touches the chair, your dog is already waiting for you at the table — begging. Then he starts to paw at you. So, now you have become incredibly annoyed at the poor manners demonstrated by your loving dog.

While this is not the worst behavior that you could encounter from your dog, it can be quite exasperating. The big surprise might be that this is most likely a learned behavior.

Think back to those times when your dog sat at your feet, while you were munching on some chips or popcorn and you thought it was hilarious to toss some pieces in the air, and then watch your dog be silly trying to catch the morsels.

This behavior has worked for your dog in the past, and now, you have created a monster. Some dogs become so assertive that they will bark at you or put their paws up on the table.

Now, you want this behavior stopped. It is no longer amusing.

The best practice is not to unwittingly train your dog to beg in the first place. However, if your dog has become a moocher, follow these training methods:

• Have a scheduled feeding time for your dog. Do this at the same time every day.

• Feed your dog at the same time as you sit down to eat, assuring that he will be occupied during your mealtime.

• Feed your dog in a different area than which you eat.

• Never give in to begging. Be consistent.

• Punishment is never a good way to teach your dog. He will not understand why he is being punished.

• It is OK to give your dog treats, but you should be the one to decide when he gets a treat. So, hold a food item in your closed hand. Do not open your hand until your dog is calm and stops demanding the treat. Then, say, “take it” and open your hand, allowing your dog access to the food. Practice this many times.

You are in charge. Your dog will appreciate you being a kind and gentle leader.
