PALMER — Devon Shaw recently discussed the outcome of the 2022 AK Rhymefest event as well as his efforts contributing to the Alaskan hip-hop community and the state's overall music scene over the past two decades.

Over 20 Alaskan artists from across the state performed at Klondike Mike's in downtown Palmer for the 2022 Rhymefest. Shaw said they drew a sizable crowd throughout the event.

"The dance floor was packed the whole night. This one was extremely great. I’ve heard people say it’s one of the best ones we’ve had so far,” Shaw said.

This year's event featured an array of artists. There was even a full burlesque show led by Madame Karisma.

"It was a good blend of everybody," Shaw said.

Shaw said they decorated the interior of Klondike Mike's and offered drink specials and a taco bar to attendees. He said that he's thankful for his long-standing relationship with the local venue.

"It's that small town love," Shaw said.

Shaw grew up in Palmer and dove headfirst into the music scene when he was still in high school. After 20 years of making his own music as D the Lyricist and doing what he can to promote the work of others across the state, he said that he feels grateful for the opportunity and he would do it again in a heartbeat.

“This is my home I want to give back to my community. I’ve enjoyed the ride,” Shaw said. “I've lived a very blessed life… Being born and bred here makes you special. I truly believe that.”

AK Rhymefest originally started as an outdoor music festival. It has since developed into a multi-media platform that promotes Alaskan musicians through various endeavors such as a podcast where Shaw interviews local performers about their craft.

“That was my contribution. I want to help guide the future of artists. That's my legacy right there. That's the system I want to leave behind,” Shaw said. “What Rhymefest stands for, they believe in it. As artists, we give our lives to this music and this is a celebration of that.”

Alaska Rhymefest is returning to the Alaska State Fair, giving local artists a chance to shine on a platform Shaw has been working towards for years. He said the Fair has welcomed them back to put on a concert every year, which is a huge milestone for the Alaskan music scene, particularly the hip-hop community.

“It's everything I wanted. It's what I worked so hard for," Shaw said. “This is the biggest platform in the state. I'm trying to see everybody win. It's the celebration of our art. It's the celebration of what makes us unique. AK Rhyme is a showcase of Alaska.”
