While there has been a lot of talk lately about removing books from libraries, The Friends of the Wasilla Library would like to invite readers to some amazing events at the library, starting with a call to readers and history buffs alike for a silent auction this Thursday.

Available for bidding are collectable Alaska history books, prints, and other interesting finds. Also, Aaron Leggett, Curator of Alaska History and Culture at the Anchorage Museum, and President of the Eklutna Tribal Council, will be on hand to present ‘Connecting with Alaska History.’

Bidding on the silent auction opens at noon. All proceeds support the Wasilla Public Library. Please checks or cash only.

But that’s not the only thing happening at the Wasilla Public Library, the second busiest library in the state. In the last fiscal year, Wasilla Public Library received 105,000 visitors. Patrons enjoy a wide variety of services including computer services, programing, study room access, and of course books and materials check out.

The monthly Firelight Book Club continues to meet, and while the December meeting was already held, it’s not too late to pick up a copy of this month’s selection, ‘Skipping Christmas’ by John Grisham. This is a fun quick read. Copies of the book are available for check out at the main circulation desk. As always, all are welcome.

While the weather may be little frightful, the current Storywalk features ‘Stopping by the Woods on a Snowy Evening,’ illustrated by Susan Jeffers. Readers are encouraged to stroll around the library and enjoy this beautifully illustrated classic. A special thanks to Edge Athletics for sponsoring this book.

Jeanne Troshynski, President of the Friends of the Wasilla Library, would also like to extend an invitation to the next Storywalk, ‘The Night Before Christmas,’ on December 16, from 1:00 to 2:30.

“We’ll be celebrating our next book in the Storywalk – The Night Before Christmas. After walking the Storywalk, visitors are invited to join Santa in the multipurpose room for hot chocolate and hot apple cider. There will also be a cookie decorating station and a craft station.”

Visitors to the library are also encouraged to check out the winners of this year’s bookmark contest at the Main Circulation desk.

“729 students in grades K-12 entered bookmarks in this year’s contest. Copies of the bookmarks are available to the public.”

For those readers not sure where to start, Troshynski suggest that they stop by the library and fill out a form, and the dedicated librarians will make a reading suggestion and provide a chocolate to enjoy with your book. Anyone 18 and older can participate.

The Friends of Wasilla Public Library extends their appreciation to the amazing staff each year with a ‘12 Days of Christmas’ activity.

“We are inviting the community to send a thank you note to your favorite librarian! We are so lucky to have such a dedicated and professional staff at the Wasilla Public Library. During this time when our library is under attack it is important to support our staff.”
