Houston High School Peer Helpers will host a Fall Carnival on Halloween Night during Red Ribbon Week to promote anti-drug use and provide a safe, warm atmosphere for kids to enjoy the holiday. The event is 6 to 8 p.m., Oct. 31 at Houston High, with a fireworks display at 8:05 p.m. Admission is one can of food or $2 per family. Game tickets are 25 cents each and games require two to four tickets each.
“Halloween Hollow” is from 3 to 8 p.m., Oct. 31 at Raven Hall on the Alaska State Fairgrounds. Admission is $5 per person, or a new, unwrapped toy — no stuffed animals, please. The festival is a fundraiser for the Mat-Su Special Santa Program, a local nonprofit that shares toys, books and clothes with Valley children.
Six fire stations in the Mat-Su Borough have scheduled open houses to offer safe, dry places to trick or treat on Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. Open houses are planned at Station 52, Bogard and Engstrom; Station 61; Station 62, Mile 7, Knik-Goose Bay Road; Station 63, 11021 Horizon Dr., Mile 12.8 Knik-Goose Bay Road; Station 65, Seward Meridian Parkway and Palmer-Wasilla Highway; and Station 66, Mile 5, Fairview Loop.
Our Lady of the Valley will hold its annual Halloween Festival from 6:30 to 8 p.m., Oct. 31 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 1201 Bogard Road. Admission is free, however organizers ask that you bring one food or paper item to donate to the food bank. There will be a prize awarded for the most creative table. To volunteer to set up a game or pass out candy, or if you would like a to reserve a table to decorate, contact Sarah Soule at 232-0520 or the OLV office at 376-0883.
