Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

PALMER — The theme for this month’s Second Saturday Palmer Art Walk is “Literary Month.” There are 18 stops on this month’s walk, but participants only need to stop at 10 locations. This month people will collect items at each stop for a “Mallow Madness” kit that folks can use at the museum to roast their own marshmallows to make s’mores from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
1. Arkose Brewery, 650 E. Steel Loop, 746-BEER: The local brewery is hosting Beer and Book, a Beer Meets Canvas event, from 2 to 4 p.m., in which Arkose provides one pint or a flight of four tasters and art supplies you can use to create your own masterpiece. This event is for those age 21 or older and costs $30.
2. The Gallery, 1150 S. Colony Way, 745-1420: This fun and eclectic gallery will showcase the work of pointillist artist Gail Niebrugge. She will be at The Gallery presenting her new originals and giclees from 2 to 7 p.m.
3. Eagle Hotel, 918 S. Colony Way, 333-9000: This great venue has it all, comfortable rooms to rest in, an entertaining bar with pool tables and flat screens and a tasty restaurant. Meggie Aube will perform on the marimba from 6 to 8 p.m.
4. Cover Ups, 840 S. Colony Way, 746-4739: Your popular Palmer upcycle shop will host artist Sandra Cook, who will provide live demonstrations on how to create an artistic book. Cook is not only a talented bookmaker, but also a great ceramicist and fiber artist ,so be sure to ask her about her other work while you’re there.
5. Midnight Sun Yoga Center, 832 S. Colony Way, 355-8889: This rejuvenating location is hosting its April show “Monoprint Mandalas,” by Palmer artist Emily Longbrake. During the Art Walk, peruse her beautiful work and join local percussionist Meggie Aube for hand drum demonstrations and a drum circle to follow. Tea and snacks will be served. All ages and ability levels welcome to this free family event.
6. Nu-KreationZ Art and Activity Center, 735 S. Bailey St., 746-2787: This new art and creativity center in Palmer is hosting “Garden Art — Pottery Birdhouses,” a special art walk workshop limited to 10 people that runs from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Cost is $25 and includes all materials and glazing. Call to reserve a space.
7. Garden Gate, 111 W. Evergreen Ave., 745-1450: This store has been around Palmer for a while, but has relocated and set up shop closer to what locals call Main Street. They will host a storytelling session with the assistance of some valuable puppet friends.
8. NonEssentials, 550 S. Alaska St., 745-2258: NonEssentials is helping everyone take steps toward eating healthier and will host S.J. Klein from Alaska Sprouts. Klein will be at NonEssentials with fresh tofu, micro greens and sprouts from 1 to 4 p.m.
9. Fireside Books, 720 S. Alaska St., 745-BOOK: Fireside Books is extending its regular business hours and will share the written word from 4 to 6 p.m. with a poetry reading and storytelling session.
10. Vagabond Blues, 642 S. Alaska St., 746-2233; This great bistro serves up a mean cup of Joe, so be sure to fuel up along your journey and enjoy the wonderful artwork of Raven Wi Creations.
11. Sidekicks TLC and More, 642 S. Alaska St., 746-4438: Sidekicks will host Cory Williamson, local author of the newly released “Warriors Are Made,” from 3 to 7 p.m. Williamson will be doing a signing of her book. You can also stop in for a chance to enter Sidekicks’ drawing this month.
12. Alaska Artisans and Turkey Red, 550 S. Alaska St., 746-5544: This artistic group will be set up at Turkey Red with a wide selection of art and crafts on display and for purchase just in case you have to acquire that last minute gift for your special someone.
13. Palmer Downtown Deli, Palmer Deli (Hallway), 550 S. Alaska St.: This great snack stop will be hosting artists Judy Vars and Barbara Apangalook just outside in the hallway.
14. Shane Lamb Gallery, 550 S. Alaska St., 746-3343: This lovely gallery’s featured artist for April will be wildlife artist Chip Brock of Wasilla. Stop on in and meet Brock in person from 4 to 7 p.m.
15. Healing Path Therapeutic Massage, 550 S. Alaska St., 715-8748: This relaxing venue will provide massages in the mall at a discount rate to participants of the Art Walk from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Massages will be $1 a minute and you can stop by or call ahead to reserve your time. They will also host artist Sandra Chandler of Leeward Studio, birch baskets by Robert Dorethit and you can purchase greeting cards designed by members of Mat-Su Valley Hospice.
16. Chickadees, Corner of Arctic Way and the Glenn Highway, 745-2200: This antiques/local goods/consignment shop is well worth a visit. They will host the artwork of Karen Whitworth, a talented local landscape and garden artist.
17. Palmer Public Library, 655 S. Valley Way: The Dorothy G. Page Museum is celebrating the fishing season. Stop by the museum’s Art Walk booth at the library to learn about the best fishing spots in the Valley as well as some tips and tricks to catching the big one. The museum will also have Go Fish! for the kids. Try your hand at fishing on dry land. Kids will also be able to color and create their own fish to take home. You can also pick up information about upcoming events, exhibits and programs.
18. Palmer Museum and Visitors Center, 723 S. Valley Way, 746-7668: The Palmer Museum will be featuring the original book illustrations of Jon Van Zyle. If you missed his autograph session during last month’s Art Walk, you can still pick up a signed print in the museum store to take home with you. This month, the museum is so anxious for spring and has decided to combine literature with gardening to offer folks a chance to build their own book planter. This crafting project is designed for people 13 and older. If you can’t make a book planter, don’t worry because the museum will also have supplies available for you to make your own kite or monster bookmark. All museum events are free, but donations are appreciated.
