PALMER — Summer may be winding down but that doesn't mean the Palmer Art Walk is cooling off any time soon.
For the August event, the Palmer Museum and other Art Walk sponsors are partnering with the 49th State Street Rodders, in conjunction with their Hot Summer Nights car show, which is in downtown Palmer on Saturday, August 8. The Art Walk is from 2 to 6 p.m., and the museum will be open until 8 p.m., but visitors are encouraged to stick around and enjoy the car show until 10 p.m.
Throughout the afternoon, walkers can collect components at each stop to build their own toy car. Walkers can assemble their cars at the museum after the walk where there will also be a racetrack. The “driver” who travels the farthest on the track will win a bag of goodies, including free movie tickets to the Valley Cinema, a guided tour for two at the Alaska Zoo in Anchorage, a 2015 Palmer Garden and Art Faire t-shirt, and more.
The details for the August Art Walk are as follows:
This eco-friendly, resale, women's clothing boutique is just around the corner from Palmer High School. Local photographer Jane Bailey is their featured artist this weekend, and art walkers who stop by Magpie may sign up for a drawing to win a $25 gift certificate.
The museum’s newest exhibit, “Artifacts as Art,” will be on display for this weekend’s art walk. Take a look at the latest trend of using older objects as decorative artistic pieces rather than preserving them as historical items. The exhibit was crafted using pieces from the museum's own historical collections and offers a rare opportunity to see what additional artifacts the exhibit houses in its basement storage.
In honor of this year's Alaska State Fair theme, “Dig In,” which is all about plants, the gallery will be hosting a drawing for a tempered glass kitchen board made by Shane Lamb with the “Wild Rose” image and an African violet plant. Stop in and see their large selection of more than 50 Alaskan artists’ and crafters’ creations before entering the drawing. The winner will be announced after 5 p.m.
B. Bella is taking a break from the Art Walk this month to allow its new neighbor, Forever Endeavor, an art supply and gift store, to show Palmer what they’ve got. Forever Endeavor will give a special narwhal crayon demonstration. Stop by to welcome one of Palmer’s newest downtown businesses and check out their selection of unique gifts.
Arkose Brewery’s Beer Meets Canvas event is back. Tap into your inner artist while Arkose taps into their tap lines from 2 to 4 p.m. For $30, walkers get one pint of beer and all the art supplies needed to create a masterpiece. This event is open to those 21 years or older and pre-registration is required. To register, call the brewery at 746-2337.
Join local experts of the written word at 2 p.m. for a book signing by AdriAnne Strickland, who will speak about her newest book, “Lifeless,” the second book of her debut young adult sci-fi fantasy series, “Wordless.”
Artists, musicians and demonstrators are still needed for this and future art walks. To be a part of the Art Walk and display your work or give a live performance, contact Kyndra White-Hunt at the Palmer Museum of History and Art. Openings are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
