HOUSTON — The city of Houston celebrates its 46th birthday Aug. 18 with its annual Founders Day celebration. Incorporated June 6, 1966, Founders Day is always the third Saturday in August. This year’s event includes music by the Air Force Band, kids’ games and all the usual stuff.
Founders Day events:
• 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. — Little Susitna River Campground Weed Attack
• Noon to 10 p.m. — Vendors open
• Noon to 9 p.m. — HFD Auxiliary fundraising garage sale and silent auction
• 6 p.m. — Parade begins. Lineup starts at 5 p.m. Prizes and trophies for top three.
• 6:30 p.m. — “Top Cover,” Air Force Band of the Pacific
• 6:30 p.m. — Barbecue starts
• 6:30 p.m. — Kid’s games
• 6:30 p.m. — Poker tournament starts, $100 prize
• 6:30 p.m. — Bird experience and education
• 6:30 p.m. — LifeMed helicopter arrives
• 7 p.m. — Firefighting kids games
• 7 p.m. — Dunk tank
• 7 p.m. — Aurora Borealis Dancers
• 8 p.m. — Pie eating contest, $100 prize
• 9 p.m. — Cake walk
• 9:30 p.m. — Rubber duck race, $1,000 prize
• 10 p.m. — Chinese lanterns
• 10:30 p.m. — Fireworks show
