To the editor:
Colony Estates and Chugach Estates in Palmer have reportedly raised rents by 33% while maintenance and snow removal remain inadequate. This creates a serious crisis for seniors on fixed incomes.
These income-based properties serve residents primarily relying on Social Security benefits, which increased only 2.5% in 2025. When housing costs rise dramatically faster than income, vulnerable seniors face impossible choices. Many senior benefits are cut such as lunch and limited ride services.
The facilities previously struggled financially, with management citing years of operating "in the red." However, substantial rent increases paired with poor maintenance suggests residents are paying more for deteriorating conditions.
It's time to address this matter directly. Local officials should investigate these reported rent hikes and service failures at taxpayer-supported senior housing facilities.
